Mind Your Body, Work Your Soul
One former volunteer's journey to health
By Katie Mulembe, Catholic Volunteer Network

Many of us have very fond memories of our year (or two, or three!) of service. We remember it as a time of fulfillment, growth, and deep joy - all results of living simply, walking with the poor, nurturing a regular prayer life, and experiencing the accountability of intentional community. Coming home can be a huge challenge, and many find it difficult to regain the vibrancy and excitement that the year of service held.

This was the experience of Clare Strockbine (now Clare Acosta Matos) when she returned from her time of service with Rostro de Cristo in Duran, Ecuador. The transition was not easy, but eventually, she found that pursuing physical fitness through diet and exercise helped her create a lifestyle that was both physically and spiritually nourishing. Clare shares about this experience in her new book Mind Your Body, Work Your Soul.   Read more...

Alumni Reflection: Growing in Awareness of God's Love
By Barbara Wheeler, Catholic Volunteer Network

One of my favorite childhood stories is The Velveteen Rabbit. I love the Skin Horse's answer to the Velveteen Rabbit's question, "What is Real? Does it happen all at once or bit by bit?" The Skin Horse responds:

It doesn't happen all at once. You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real, you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.

I love this response. What the Rabbit is asking, on behalf of all of us, is what it means to be truly human and fully alive. It's one of those "ultimate questions," the kind of question that we often run from in our day to day shuffle, stifling the answer in noise and distractions. Read more...

"Volunteer Introspective: A Survey of Former Catholic Volunteer Network Volunteers"
By Jim Lindsay, Catholic Volunteer Network

"Volunteer Introspective - A Survey of Former Volunteers of the Catholic Volunteer Network,"
is a national survey commissioned by Catholic Volunteer Network (CVN) with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University. The survey looked at more than 5,000 men and women in CVN member organizations. Full survey results were released on Friday, November 8, 2013 at the Catholic Volunteer Network's annual conference in Silver Spring, MD, which also served as a celebration of our 50thanniversary.  Learn more about the survey findings.

Being the Light of Faith - Lumen Fidei and the New Evangelization
A Webinar hosted by the Catholic Apostolate Center
January 24, 2014
2:00pm EST
Pope Francis' first encyclical is a shining example of the New Evangelization in action. It re-proposes what it means to be Catholic today and how Catholics are to be in the world - as witness, as leaven, and as servant. This webinar will explore the basic themes of Lumen Fidei and what that means for young adults in the Church today. Click here for more details.
