Webinar No. 1:  Thursday, June 14, 11 a.m. to Noon CDT

 Community Readiness  

This webinar will feature Mike Stolte, Executive Director, Centre for Innovative & Entrepreneurial Leadership, who will be sharing what CIEL has learned about community readiness through the Community Life Cycle Matrix.  The Matrix is an assessment tool that helps measure community readiness according to seven elements, ranging from Connections and Cooperation through Community Entrepreneurship.  Those seven elements are tied to a community life cycle conceptual framework that begins with Chaos and ends with Actualization.  Mike will be joined by Ariana McBride, Senior Associate, Orton Family Foundation, who will share what Orton has been learning about community readiness through the foundation’s Heart & Soul planning initiative, now entering its second phase with communities in the Northeast and the Rocky Mountain West.  This webinar will be moderated by Milan Wall, Co-Director, Heartland Center for Leadership Development.

 Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an introduction to CIEL’s Community Life Cycle Matrix
  • Learn how the Matrix has been applied to help determine where a community is and where it would like to go
  • Gain insights into the Orton Family Foundation’s Heart & Soul planning initiative
  • Learn what Orton has discovered about community readiness for visioning and community action through its work with communities in the Northeast and Rocky Mountain West

Webinar No. 2:  Thursday, June 21, 11 a.m. to Noon CDT

 Community Capacity

This webinar features Steven Ames, Principal, NXT Consulting, who has just completed an extensive study on community capacity resulting in a report entitled, Stewarding the Future of Our Communities: Case Studies in Sustaining Community Engagement and Planning in America’s Small Cities and Towns.  These five case studies focus on stewardship of community engagement and planning in order to further sustainability.  Steven will be joined by Bonnie Hildreth, President, Barry Community Foundation, in Hastings, Barry County, Michigan.  Bonnie will share some of the insights learned from Barry County’s HomeTown Partnership initiative.  This webinar will be moderated by Mary Emery, Department Chair, Sociology and Rural Studies, South Dakota State University.

 Learning Objectives:

  • Learn key elements of the concept of community stewardship
  • Review five key approaches to community capacity represented in the stewardship framework
  • Gain an introduction to the HomeTown Partnership model for community capacity building
  • Learn how Barry County has progressed using the HTP approach

 Webinar No. 3:  Thursday, June 28, 11 a.m. to Noon CDT

 Measuring Community Changes and Impacts

This webinar includes Maureen Hart, Sustainable Measures, and Liz Weaver, Tamarack, who have worked extensively with U.S. and Canadian communities on designing measures of development and change to understand the impact on the sustainability and vitality of communities. Topics to be discussed will include principles and practices in designing indicators and metrics, designing and implementing an effective measurement process, and evaluating the impact on the community using indicators and performance metrics. Maureen will present an overview of issues involved in measuring community change and vitality and describe effective practices. Liz will present the results from the Creating Vibrant Communities program underway in Canada. The program will be moderated by Norman Walzer, Senior Research Scholar, Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University.

 Learning Objectives:

  • Understand key components in an effective measurement system including differences between indicators and metrics and organizational levels to measure changes
  • Learn ways to engage partners in the measurement process and their importance in the outcomes
  • Determine ways to evaluate the impact on community change and ways to incorporate into            decision-making processes
  • See examples of effects on communities from using an effective measurement process
