NRAAC Nat'l Chair's News Release
NRAAC Takes Prudent Approach to Same Sex Marriage

The National Republican African American Caucus [NRAAC] issues the following statement on its position on same sex marriage.

According to the National Chair, Dr. Jean Howard-Hill, the NRAAC does not condone same sex marriages and is in full support of traditional marriages between man and woman. However, the organization also recognizes that same sex marriage is not the only Bible-based prohibited conduct.

"If we are going to use the Bible to condemn same sex marriage, we also have to add to our shopping cart the condemning of other Bible-based sexually prohibited conduct including adulterous relationships while married, sex before marriage, rape, pornography, prostitution, zoophilia-bestiality, pedophilism and human trafficking. Because all of it is governed by the same laws of sexual purity that are set forth within the Bible. It would be totally hypocritical if we did not also deal with this and add it to the cart." Says Howard-Hill.

"On the issue of marriage, it also is time to clean up the heterosexual house as well."

Newly appointed National Co-Chair NRAAC- Frank Mitchell of Columbus, Ohio, also weighs in on the issue of hate crimes and bullying.

According to Mr. Mitchell, "We take the position that marriage by law and nature should only be between a man and woman, but we also must be sensitive to the fact that even those involved in the lifestyle should not be susceptible to hate crimes and bullying."

The national chair agrees and emphatically states, "Clearly the NRAAC does not condone the act of bullying anyone, including those of a different sexual orientation. Nor do we condone hate crimes. The act of bullying is a cowardly, mean and unwarranted show of force, power or control over another person and their right to be free of intimidation and hate. For these reasons, our organization does not tolerate or condone any form of bullying or hate crimes for any reasons, against any person."

The NRAAC has been around for over 12 years, and prior to this it existed as two separate organizations, the National Black Republican Women's Organization in which Dr. Howard-Hill headed and the National Black Republican Men for Change which was headed by her husband, the late Attorney Bobby Lee Hill. Both organizations began in 1987 and after the death of Mr. Hill in 1991; they were combined in 1999 to form the National Republican African American Caucus.
