PSC RECENTLY APPROVES INCREASE
GA. POWER CUSTOMERS
SEE RATE HIKE IN 2014
As of Jan. 1, Georgia Power Co. customers are seeing their residential utility bills rising by $2.19 a month.
In 2015, ratepayers will pay an additional $3.61 a month; monthly rates rise again in 2016 by  $2.96. Georgia Power also agreed to lower its profit from 11.5 percent to 10.95 percent.
The state Public Service Commission approved the rate increase Dec. 17.
Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of a compromise between the agency's staff and the Atlanta-based utility that will allow Georgia Power to collect hundreds of millions of dollars more from ratepayers during the next three years.
However, Georgia Power will receive 40 percent less than the utility asked for in its original request filed last summer, saving customers $573 million during the three-year period of the rate hike, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION SETS LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
The South Georgia office of the Alzheimer's Association has scheduled two legislative updates in Tifton this month in preparation for Alzheimer's Awareness and Advocacy Day at the state capitol on Feb. 13.
The first program will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Leroy Rogers Senior Center, 315 Second St., during the monthly Tifton Alzheimer's Support Group. Another program for those who miss the Jan. 9 meeting is set for 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at Leroy Rogers.
The association will discuss pending legislative issues dealing with Alzheimer's disease and related elder care. For information, call 229-388-8219 or 1-800-272-3900. Those who wish to participate in Alzheimer's Day at the Capitol may also register online by clicking here.
Those who wish to learn more about Alzheimer's Day at the Capitol may stay after the legislative update for advocacy training. This second half of each program is to help those who have not participated in Alzheimer's Day in the past to know what to expect.
South Georgians will join more than 300 statewide advocates for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders Feb. 13 for Alzheimer's Day at the state capitol in Atlanta, organized by the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter. The South Georgia Regional Office is providing transportation from Leroy Rogers Senior Center and has room for more participants if they register by Friday, Feb. 8.
Awareness Day participants receive a VOICE T-shirt; lunch will be provided. There is no charge, but registration is required in order to plan meals and materials.
The day begins at 9 a.m. with a photo with Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. Next, advocates will keep scheduled appointments with their elected senators and representatives and have lunch with the legislators in a reception hall. Alzheimer's Day ends at 3:30 p.m. after a closing ceremony and Candlelight Tribute Rally on the front steps of the Capitol.
"The South Georgia Region represents 35 counties in the fight against Alzheimer's disease," said Bonnie Sayles, regional program director. "We need to show our legislators in Atlanta that we speak with one voice in asking them to fund research and provide resources for the nearly 200,000 Georgians with Alzheimer's and related disorders."
She said 600 people in South Georgia have signed up as Alzheimer's disease advocates just since July 2013.

Several brave souls began 2014 with the annual "Polar Bear Plunge" at the Tiftarea YMCA -- jumping into the outdoor swimming pool on New Year's Day.

IT'S A NEW YEAR:
TIME TO GET HEALTHY
The Team Fitness & Wellness Challenge begins Monday, Jan. 13. The weight loss competition benefits the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Tift County.
  The 12-week competition begins with participants dropping by Tifton Fitness & Wellness Center, 1488 Old Ocilla Road, between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Jan. 13 to register and weigh in. Teams of four to six people compete for a cash prize. Winners are determined based on the most points earned. The majority of points will be awarded for losing weight. Points may also be earned throughout the competition by keeping food and exercise logs, participating in fitness tests Jan. 18 and April 5, participating in the annual Sweetheart Run and winning weekly contests.

SWAP HELPS GARDENERS PREPARE FOR SPRING
Although winter has just begun, spring is still just around the corner and it's time to start garden preparation. To help get local gardeners ready and to inspire new gardeners, the Wiregrass Farmers Market has its third annual Seed and Plant Swap on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9:30 - 11 a.m. in the museum foyer at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture.
No money will be exchanged for any of the plants or seeds. The event is free and is open to anyone with an interest in gardening and who has some seeds or plants to share -- and to anyone who wishes to chat about gardening and planting. Refreshments, prepared by Wiregrass Farmers Market vendors, will be available.
Given the large number of seeds found in commercial seed packets, many gardeners have more seeds of a particular variety than they need to plant their backyard hobby gardens. Others may save seeds from usual plants or plants their grandparents used to grow, seeds not easily obtainable on the commercial market.
Some gardeners have extra plants as a result of thinning their flower beds or dividing clumps of plants or bulbs, or they have rooted cuttings from heirloom plants they pruned.
This event aims to bring such people together to exchange any extra or unusual seeds and plants with others in the community who will put them to good use. At the event, a copy of regional author Janisse Ray's book, The Seed Underground: A Growing Revolution To Save Food, will be raffled, along with a native azalea plant and some items from the vendors at the Wiregrass Farmers Market. Raffle tickets are $2 each; proceeds go toward the Wiregrass Farmers Market, which opens for its third season in early April.

NOMINATE SOMEONE FOR ABAC'S
ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Nominations are being accepted for the Athletics Hall of Fame at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 15.
 ABAC Athletics Director Alan Kramer said any individual, living or deceased, can be considered for induction. Individuals are nominated in one of three categories: Athlete, Coach or Contributor. The induction ceremony for the 2014 class is scheduled April 4 as a part of ABAC Homecoming. Kramer said athletic achievement, integrity, sportsmanship and character will be considered. He said the college is also looking for individuals who may have been good athletes while at ABAC, but who went on to coach high school or college teams to state or national titles.
