April 2012
Welcome to the Warmth from the Millyard newsletter!

Dear Warmth from the Millyard Supporter,

It's been an amazing year for the UNH Warmth from the Millyard (WFMY) project! Once again, students organized a warm clothing drive that brought thousands of items to dozens of organizations across the state. You'll see some of the partnerships that enabled this to happen featured in this newsletter. Please check out our blog (linked below) to see more stories about these wonderful partners. We are also thrilled with our growing "youth leadership" effort that is connecting the WFMY service project with more structured leadership skills-building opportunities. We've highlighted some of these in our newsletter as well.

The WFMY project remains a growing and vital collaborative effort with UNH Manchester, the UNH Community Leadership Program and a growing group of diverse partners. Together we are meeting immediate needs for warm clothing and creating a model of community engagement and activity. Thank you for your support and interest in this work.
Girltopia Expo 2012

The Girltopia 2012 event was an amazing opportunity that was given graciously by the Girl Scout organization to the  Warmth From the Millyard project! This event was held on February 25th at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.  2,500 girls and adults celebrated the Girl Scouts 100th anniversary and also donated over 500 items of warm clothing to our project.
Thanks, NH D.O.T!

The Warmth From the Millyard was pleased to have the opportunity to once again work with the Department of Transportation. The DOT ran their clothing drive from February 14th until March 1st. They collected winter clothing including hats, gloves, coats, and blankets. In just 2 short weeks, they were able to collect and distribute 30+ bags of warm clothing to the Easter Seals of New Hampshire. A very special "thank you" to Bill Boynton at the NH DOT!
Civil Tech Mapping Project

The Warmth from the Millyard project on campus has been working to broaden connections in the Manchester area. We are working with the Thompson School of Applied Science at the Durham campus to create an interactive map displaying all organizations in Manchester that provide free or low-cost clothing to individuals in need. The UNH Civil Technology program has been more than helpful getting this map project on its feet. Warmth from the Millyard is delighted to create this useful tool that could bring the people of Manchester closer together. The interactive map, once finished, will be available on the Warmth from the Millyard website. If there is an organization that you feel should be recognized for their efforts in our community, please contact Beth at eay45@unh.edu

Great news! We recently received approval for a VISTA AMERICORPS grant for a full-time coordinator of the Warmth from the Millyard project to begin this August which will enable us to continue this exciting work. We welcome Beth Brideau, a UNH Manchester student, who has worked with the project for a number of years as the new Coordinator!

Thank you to the NH Lions Club!

Professor Kate Hanson attended the NH Lions Club Convention to give the leaders certificates from the Warmth from the Millyard project in recognition of the amazing work the group did for us this winter. In all, the NH Lions Club donated over 13,000 hats, gloves and mittens to dozens of local agencies throughout the state. This is the second year they've worked with us and we are truly thrilled to have them as partners.
Far-Away Georgians Visit The Millyard

Written by Herb Pence

Five college leaders from the Republic of Georgia, located on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, visited the UNH Manchester campus in March. They were on a U.S. Department of State sponsored visit to the U.S. The trip's purpose was to expose them to university student governance and communication.
PASS Program Wins Campus Compact Award

The Manchester School of Technology's PASS program has received the Campus Compact for New Hampshire Community Partner Award for their work with UNH Manchester and the Warmth from the Millyard project.
Oral History Project with Kids at the Beech Street School

For the last nine weeks, WFMY has been working in collaboration with the 21st Century After School program at Beech St. School in Manchester.  We have had a dedicated group of 17 students who have met weekly to learn about leadership by completing oral history research projects about some of the leaders in their school. Our focus has been on having students learn that they have many opportunities to become leaders in all of the communities they are a part of.
