Summer Composition Workshop

Great news!  A new summer offering for composition for students!

Music-COMP (formerly the Vermont MIDI Project) and Burlington Ensemble are launching their new collaboration, the String Quartet Project (SQP), with a new summer workshop devoted entirely to composition. The workshop will feature Music-COMP senior mentor Erik Nielsen as instructor and will take place Monday, July 23 through Friday, July 27.

The location is the historic Shelburne Town Hall (5240 Shelburne Road) in beautiful Shelburne, Vermont. The time is 1-4 p.m. each day and during that time each student will work with Mr. Nielsen to create a new piece for strings, with any combination of violin, viola and/or cello up to a full string quartet (two violins, viola, cello).  In addition, Mr. Nielsen will work with the students on various aspects of composition, including harmony, melody, orchestration, and thematic development.

The workshop's culminating activities will be Friday and Saturday afternoon readings of the pieces from 4-5 p.m. These readings are free to all.  They will be followed by a performance of the student works featuring members of  Burlington Ensemble during their Friday or Saturday evening concerts.  Students and their parents are encouraged to picnic between the readings and the evening concerts, to which student workshop participants receive free admission.

The SQP Composition Workshop occurs during Burlington Ensemble's "Summer Serenade" festival of concerts between July 22-28.  Tuition is $200 for the week and workshop size is very limited, so sign up early.
