LEAF CLEANUP WINDS DOWN

November is always one of our most challenging months as it is hard to keep up with the leaf drop especially with the normally challenging weather. This year was no exception. While the leaves are falling, we focus on removing major accumulations. On some projects with large trees, leaves can be falling so fast and heavy that it is sometimes hard to tell we were there even a day later. Luckily the heavy leaf drop is over and we are now working on the final clean-up of most sites.

As we have in the past, we are working over the Thanksgiving holiday to take advantage of many businesses that were closed as leaves are much easier to cleanup when we aren't worried about cars and people.

Although the bulk of the leaves are down and most picked up, some pesky trees including Sweetgum, Flowering Pear and Oaks still have leaves on them. Sites with late falling leaves will continue to be messy until all leaves are down. In addition, we are battling leaves blowing in from roadways and adjacent properties during windy weather. We are still hard at work with the goal of getting all sites cleaned up as soon as possible. We will stay busy through Christmas finishing the clean-up.

Most sites are receiving a final mowing now. It is fairly common to move our last mowing into Late November or early December as our focus on leaf cleanup often makes mowing in November a lower priority.  With the recent dry break last week, we mowed many sites. We hope to finish all sites soon. Larger and soggier the site, this is still a challenge. Hopefully mother nature cooperates and gives us the appropriate weather to finish the job.

landscapeDECEMBER STILL A GOOD TIME FOR LANDSCAPE PROJECTS

When is the best time to perform enhancement projects you ask? Most can be seasonally specific but at the same time, the answer is when you are ready. Although it is easier to do many during the summer but many are possible to perform and possibly better during the winter. The best part of performing plantings during the late fall or early winter is that plants will get somewhat established before the dry season next summer.

We also find many of our customers have operational savings that they want to invest back into their properties before the end of their fiscal year making December a relatively popular time for some last minute projects. We are often less busy during the winter and accommodating quick turn around is often easier this time of year.

If you are interested in discussing some end of year projects in December or get a start on next year's projects in January or February, let us know.

GOOD WINTER PROJECTS INCLUDE:

  • Tree Pruning - Limb ups or structural pruning
  • Drainage - It has been dry but Winter is when drainage needs are apparent

TIME TO TREAT FOR MOSS AND CRANEFLY

We are now proposing to expand our moss control service to twice per year, winter and early spring. Previously we have done it only once a year. This is because we have seen moss re-grow before things dried out in the spring when the application was made in the winter. When we moved the treatment to later in the spring, we have seen moss get really bad before the treatment. Since moss control is relatively inexpensive, we believe two applications are cost effective and prudent in providing maximum moss control and turf density.

With one of our moss control applications, we also recommend treating for European Cranefly. European Cranefly is a soil grub that can cause severe damage in the late winter or early spring. Although we avoid blanket insect and control treatments unless critical, Cranefly is one we recommend to treat annually as the damage can be significant and comes on very quickly. The good news is that it can be done at the same time as moss control, saving labor expense when done together. We recommend treating for European Cranefly control annually and mid winter is the best time. Combining moss and Cranefly control together is much less expensive than treating for each separately.

We will be performing the Moss/Cranefly treatment during December or January and you can choose which month you want to be billed, please select the corresponding box on your proposal. Approval is needed by 12/14 to allow us to properly plan the service.

WE ARE PROVIDING PLANT HEALTH CARE IN-HOUSE

As you know, we added Plant Health Care in-house to better serve our clients.  Plant health care involves an integrated approach to beautifying and managing landscapes. It focuses on the strengthening of plant health and nutrition as a primary defense against insects and diseases. Plant health care far surpasses other approaches to pest management that involve harmful "kill-all" pesticides. It uses environmentally safe products that fortify plants against invaders and beautify landscapes. These services will include soil nutritional management, bio-stimulants and soil microbes, and integrated pest management.

As part of our goal to be the leader in landscape care and service in the area, we have added Plant Health Care to our service offering.

INVEST IN WEATHER-BASED IRRIGATION THIS WINTER AT A 15% DISCOUNT

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOME FORM OF WEATHER BASED IRRIGATION CONTROL, YOU ARE WASTING WATER AND MONEY. With over 150 ET Manager installations over the past 5 years, we estimate that we have saved our customers over 60,000,000 gallons of water and nearly $300,000 annually. You want to be a part of this club!

Weather-Based Irrigation

  • Adjusts irrigation daily based on weather
  • Can reduce your water bills by 20-40%
  • Requires no additional monitoring fees
  • Can pay for itself in less than 2 years
  • Qualifies for rebate from some water districts

The results from the 150 ET Manager controllers we operate are starting to come in and the claims of 20-40% savings are again being verified. If you were skeptical of these claims, we now have real world data to back them up. Weather Based Irrigation is one of the best ways to reduce your operating expense while maintaining a healthy landscape. Depending on the size and complexity of your site, the payback on your investment is as quick as one or two seasons.

We offer a 15% discount for controllers ordered and installed during the winter when our irrigators have extra time to dedicate to this project. We can complete this work before the end of the year if you have unused funds or early next year if you need it to be a 2013 expense. We just need approval by January 1st to schedule before we start next year's system activation and maintenance.

SUPPORT THE IREM MITTENS & MORE COAT DRIVE

For the fourth year in a row, we are making donations to charities instead of delivering Christmas baskets.

We will again donate 100 coats to the IREM Mittens and More Coat Drive at the IREM Annual Forecast Breakfast coming up at 7:00am, Thursday, December 5th at the Oregon Convention Center. We challenge you to participate in this fantastic project and bring coats to the event. IREM has set the goal to collect 2,012 coats to donate to the Oregon DHS Mittens and More program to support foster children. We need help from everyone to meet this goal. We are a proud Friend of IREM and proud donor to the Mittens and More Coat Drive, please join us.

In addition, we are donating $1,000 to the Oregon Food Bank to help deserving families. We hope you have a joyous holiday season and are making these donations in your honor.

SUSTAINABILITY SAVES MONEY

Our focus on sustainability continues to find new ways to save us money and keep our operational costs down. Sustainability is way more than "saving the world". To be truly sustainable, it has to be economically sustainable.

Similar to our projects at our Hillsboro facility, we have made energy conservation improvements to our new Sherwood facility. This past spring we added the solar panels to the roof of this facility. It produces over 100% of our energy use and the surplus power is pumped back into the grid.   In addition and as we did in Hillsboro as well, we replaced our exterior lights with high efficiency LED. With tax incentives and Energy Trust of Oregon incentives, the ROI of both these projects was 4 years.

If you are interested in projects like these for your properties, there is a Better Lighting, Lower Costs Workshop being put on by PGE on, December 10, 2013, 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Clackamas County Development Services Bldg, 150 Beavercreek Road, Oregon City, OR 97045
