November is Feline Health Month
Cats need regular veterinary care, including annual exams, vaccinations, and necessary laboratory testing. November is also Pet Diabetes Awareness month. We are currently treating over a dozen cats for diabetes. It is estimated that about 1 in 100 cats develop diabetes (a decreased secretion of insulin from
the cat's pancreas gland). Signs of diabetes may include:
* Drinking more water and urinating more
* Hungry but often losing weight
* Less active or sleeps more
* Dull hair coat and weakness in rear legs
Diagnosis is based on our physical exam, blood and urine testing. Once diagnosed, diabetes can be managed by hydration, diet, medication, and daily insulin injections. Frequent monitoring is necessary to maintain a healthy blood sugar (glucose) level in your cat.For more information visit Dawn's Suburban Diabetes Blog. If you see any of these symptoms in your pet, call us for an appointment at 614-276-5479.
