HEADLINES

Leadership Intro
Ryan Kennedy
Kingman Committee Chair

As I write today, our federal government is in the midst of a partial shutdown, has fumbled in its roll-out of the 'Affordable Care Act" and is battling over a debt limit increase.  Dysfunction is the norm in Washington and the times call for leadership.

There is talk of an economic recovery, but our area food banks, shelters and other critical services will tell you that they are seeing record demand for emergency assistance.

Our very own "Kids Bright and Healthy" program has experienced an uptick in requests as well.  This week, we helped a 3 year-old girl with rotting teeth get the dental intervention she needed to live a more normal life.  It is inspiring to hear these examples of how our River Cities United Way (RCUW) is making a difference.

I'm equally awed by the generous and selfless work being done by our partner agencies.  They do a great job with coordinate services with other organizations to avoid duplication.  It's refreshing to hear how they creatively stretch their limited resources to extend a 'hand up' to those most in need.  I can tell you, if our politicians in Washington had an ounce of the thrift that these partner agencies demonstrate, we would not be in our current debt situation.

As you know, our RCUW is a volunteer-led organization that is able to make a difference in the lives of thousands of people within our community because of you and other generous people.  So thank you for volunteering your time, pledging financial support and attending fundraising events.

Thank you for your commitment to making your community a better place and for not dismissing these challenges as someone else's problem.  During these challenging times, thank you for answering the call for leadership.

"Louise" is an elderly lady whose home is out in the desert near the little town of Wendon, Arizona.  Her monthly income is only $600.  On this amount, she lives on her own and cares for her beloved pets. Without the Meals on Wheels program operated by Parker Senior Center, this sweet lady would have little to eat most days. But with our home-delivered meal services, she receives nutritious hot lunches and a friendly driver to check on her welfare Monday through Friday.  She has received many other services from Parker Senior Center too, like assistance with home repairs, rides to the doctor, and much more. Living on a low, fixed income, Louise would be very unlikely to receive proper nutrition without the PCSC's assistance.

We'd like to also illustrate how our organization is much like an extended family to our clients. Recently, Louise's property taxes needed to be paid, or she would lose her home.  She was heartbroken to have to solve the problem by selling her beloved pet cockatiel. When Parker Senior Center staff and volunteers found out about this, we gathered enough individual donations to enable her to buy her bird back. This may not be the typical success story, but it shows how we get to know our Senior participants and do everything we can to promote their physical and emotional well-being.

Radio-Thon (recap)

September 28th's 12-Hour event hosted by Radio Central's KNTR show host Roger Galloway on 106.3 FM, raised just over $1800 for River Cities United Way partners. Two guest speakers each hour brought awareness to RCUW's purpose, outreach, and effects within the community. Several autographed sports items were auctioned off, live in-studio entertainment, and $25 song requests being aired helped make for a successful inaugural
event.

Thank you to Havasu Regional Medical Center for sponsoring
and Radio Central for hosting!
