Greetings from Olsson Associates

It's been an exciting time to be in the Colorado area in sporting news! Congrats to the CU Buffs and the CSU Rams for making the NCAA basketball tournament -- we'd like to think we had a little help engineering CU's path to the tournament since we worked on a project expanding the arena where they practice. We'll miss Tim Tebow and wish him the best in New York, but we're excited about what Peyton Manning could bring to the Broncos. And, who could forget that we're getting closer to opening day of the '12 Rockies season?

With all of the happenings in the world of sports, we'd be remiss if we didn't share our own news about our projects and employees. This month we've shared an interesting statistic about women in engineering -- a number that we've shattered -- and we'll introduce you to some of these employees. Plus, we have an update about our work with Amtrak and a few other features.

Hope you're enjoying your spring!

Olsson's Women Engineers Shatter National Statistics

March is Women's History Month. Many statistics exist about women in engineering, and you can examine the statistics from many different perspectives. But the bottom line is that, in the professional engineering world, only about 10 to 15 percent of engineers are women. Engineering is commonly seen as the profession with the greatest underrepresentation of women, and statistics seem to bear this out.

However, at Olsson, we are happily out of sync with these statistics. More than half of the engineers in our Golden, Colorado, office are women. The women in our office represent the same range of engineering services that you will find in our other offices all over the country, including water resources, wastewater, transportation design, and environmental engineering.

In celebration of Women's History Month, we highlight some of our talented and accomplished women engineers and hope for the growth of professional women in our industry in years to come.

Olsson Ridin' the Rails on a 13-State Survey Project in the Sunshine

In July 2010, Olsson became part of an ambitious, important project to provide engineering services to meet ADA compliance requirements at 21 Amtrak stations in four states. Because the project was funded with federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money, the project needed to be completed on a very fast track--by February 2011. Olsson teamed with Krische Construction from Longmont, Colorado, to provide site improvements such as new platforms, parking lots, drainage infrastructure, lighting, and ADA compliance measures. The project fit Olsson's capabilities well. Project needs were in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri, and Olsson has offices offering multidisciplinary services in all of these states.

To meet the tight deadlines, Olsson simultaneously mobilized survey crews from the Denver, Kansas City, and Lincoln offices and a geotechnical drilling crew from the Lincoln office.
