HDDC Newsletter: The Beloved Community
Farewell 2011, Good Morning 2012
2011 was a productive comeback year for HDDC full of organizational capacity building and re-engaging the community. This year, we're looking to put the "Development" back in Historic District Development Corporation. We have several projects in the planning phase; we recently obtained our Community Housing Development Organization designation by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs; and the local market appears to be increasingly receptive to select projects with the right location, quality and pricing.

More than ever, we want to thank all of our partners and stakeholders for making our comeback possible. Stay tuned for some very big news on a special community initiative HDDC is planning to launch this Spring. Let's make this a big year together!

On December 1, 2011, HDDC hosted our Annual Holiday Open House. The purpose of our Open House is to create an opportunity to connect with our neighbors and stakeholders in a festive atmosphere while celebrating the great work taking place within our community.

Over 100 community residents, stakeholders, elected representatives and partners were in attendance to celebrate the beginning of the Holiday Season. It was a true community development party!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
To honor the service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., HDDC partnered with Hands on Atlanta and 50 volunteers to clean up and preserve the historic treasure of Herndon Plaza on Auburn Avenue. The project was sponsored by the Atlanta Life Insurance Company and volunteers included teams from AmeriCorps, Habitat for Humanity, the Georgia Center for Nonprofits and SunTrust. We plan to continue efforts to preserve and restore these structures in 2012. More pictures coming soon!

Celebration of Service

To honor the service of our military veterans on Veterans Day, HDDC and volunteers from the surrounding community began renovation work on 67 Boulevard, which will be made available to lease as affordable housing to a military veteran. The project opportunity became available thanks to a "Celebration of Service" grant awarded from the Home Depot Foundation to HDDC. Thank you Home Depot! Altria Day of Sharing Altria Day of Sharing
On Thursday, November 17, 2011, HDDC partnered with Hands On Atlanta & Altria to rehab three affordable homes in the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic District. Altria not only provided over 60 volunteers to help with painting and landscaping the three homes, but also provided a grant to help renovate an affordable home in preparation for sale. This will help ensure that the home is safe, quality and low-maintenance to help the buyer get started on the right foot. Thanks Altria! To view more pictures of this event, click here.
4-H Youth and
Wheat Street Baptist Church

HDDC had a unique volunteer opportunity on November 28, 2011 by partnering with Hands On Atlanta, Action Mission Ministry of the Wheat Street Baptist Church, and 4-H Youth from across the country and Puerto Rico. The youth served the homeless population in the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic District by packaging hygiene kits, sorting coats, and helping prepare meals. HDDC gave each of the youth a copy of a biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. and challenged them to make a difference toward social justice in their communities when they returned home. We're a CHDO!
We are proud to announce that HDDC was recently state-certified as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA). This will give us access to funding for affordable housing development and provides a respected accreditation of our organization's capacity. Thank you DCA!

Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Lauren Lowery joined HDDC as a Community Development Intern for the Fall semester of 2011 while pursuing her Master of Public Administration degree at Georgia State University with a specialization in Planning & Economic Development. We are happy to report she has decided to return for another semester until she graduates in May. Ms. Lowery has made a significant impact while at HDDC, from managing volunteer projects to grant writing to strategic planning.
