Greetings!
Saturday Oct. 24th, Needham was one of over 5,200
communities in 181 countries that held events to mark the International
Climate Day of Action. Groups from several
Needham Houses of Worship and from Green Needham fanned out to carry out
carbon emission reduction and energy saving projects across town. We've assembled a summary of the day's
events, along with a video from the Needham Channel News, on the Green Needham wiki. |

Carter Scott at next Green Needham meeting - Nov. 16th
|
The next Green Needham meeting, Nov. 16th (7-9pm) at Olin College in room AC 109, will feature Carter Scott, President of Transformations, Inc. He builds affordable zero
net energy homes. Transformations, Inc was one
of the participants in a Zero Energy Challenge competition funded by the
state's utilities. This
article from Solar Today details
the home they built - the "Needham" (they name their designs
after Massachusetts towns) - a 1,232 square foot affordable home, sold
for $195,200 with a HERS rating of -3. He will also incorporate the
stretrch energy code into this talk showing that it is very
achievable, even easy, to meet. Carter will also be speaking at the MCAN Conference on November 15th.

Home Depot puts an eco-friendly twist on trade-ins for holiday shopping
The hardware chain announced
on Friday that from Nov. 5 to 15, customers can bring in old strings of
lights and get a $3 off coupon for new LED lights -- which use 80
percent less energy than incandescent bulbs.
Through Nov. 8, you
can trade in old or broken drills for a 15 percent discount on new
drills with lithium-ion batteries, which are supposed to be more
energy-efficient and less polluting. Home Depot says it will recycle
the old drills.

Best Buy will recycle your unwanted electronics
Best Buy will take just about anything electronic, including TVs, DVD
players, computer monitors, cell phones and more. You can bring in up
to two items a day, per household, and most things are absolutely free.
However, there is a $10 charge for TVs 32" and under, CRTs, monitors
and laptops - but they'll give you a $10 Best Buy gift card to offset
that cost. |
