The
Seven Sutras of Nutrition
We receive many questions about yoga and
diet and what foods should be avoided. Is
coffee a no-no? Should I be a vegetarian? Although there are
no hard and fast rules because our needs change throughout our
lives, there are some basic principles that remain unchanged.
Below are some general nutritional
guidelines for spiritual seekers that we have put together in the
form of sutras, (threads
or short statements) based on our extensive studies with Walt
Baptiste and the great nutritionist Bernard Jensen, DC., the father
of natural nutrition in the U.S.
Sutra
1: You
are a unique and constantly changing individual. Only you can make
the nutritional changes that will allow you to be the healthiest
person you can be.
To tap the highest potentials of spiritual health and energy of
which you are capable, you will need to study and experiment with
various foods and nutritional practices. There is no single yogic
diet that suits everyone, and your eating habits will inevitably be
as individual as your yoga practice.
Sutra 2: Your thoughts
and attitudes while preparing and eating food have a profound
effect on body and spirit. Eating while angry or distracted
can significantly decrease the useful absorption of nutrients.
Staying conscious of your thoughts and conversation while eating
allows food to be transformed into the most vital energy, capable
of providing loving nourishment to the body and psyche.
Sutra
3:
The
yogi's kitchen is an altar of health
that
supports body, mind, and spirit.
The kitchen environment needs to be an inspiration in itself,
reflecting the inner sense of generosity and discipline that
results in healthy and harmonious food preparation.
Sutra
4:
People
resonate with the foods and plants
indigenous
to the region of their ancestors or birth.
Everything
in the universe is vibration and we resonate energetically to
certain areas of the planet and the foods of those
areas.
Sutra 5:
Whole
foods, raw foods, and live foods provide the richest levels of
nutrients and prana
or
life force. Foods that have not been overly cooked, processed, and
chemically or genetically altered are considered whole; raw foods
are those which have not been heated over 118 Fahrenheit, while
live foods are mostly sprouted grains and legumes. These three
classes of food retain the highest energy and nutrition
potentials.
Sutra
6:
Herbs
are nature's healers.
Nature provides us with an abundance of healing plants that have
been used for centuries by every culture on earth as both medicines
and tonics. The judicious selection and careful preparation of
these natural healers is an indispensable complement to healthy
eating.
Sutra
7:
Purification
regimens give the digestive system a rest and allow for deep
healing of body, mind and spirit.
The cleanliness of the gut and bloodstream has a direct and
profound healing effect on all the body's organs and functions,
including the well-being of the mind. Periodic cleansing regimes
are a must for higher health and well-being.

A TRUTH
SEEKING JOURNEY FROM THE HEART OF
SAN FRANCISCO TO THE WILDS OF CENTRAL AMERICA
In
The Tenth Door: An Adventure
Through The Jungles of Enlightenment,
Michele's
recounts the stunning story of her spiritual training with
legendary
Raja
Yoga Master Walt Baptiste. Journeying with her we are transported
from
San Francisco to a years-long stint of near solitude in the
jungles of
of
El Salvador as the country moves from seeming tranquility to
revolution.
The Tenth Door
transcends the world of physical yoga and explores its deep,
ancient mysteries. The lessons she
learns from Walt Baptiste's brilliant but often unorthodox
methods are at the heart of
her memoir which illuminates timeless teachings and authentic
practices in a tale that is as accessible as it is
captivating.
