In partnership with Achieving Community Tasks Successfully (ACTS), the Center will allocate $40 million in grants over three years to support disadvantaged communities in EPA Region 6, addressing barriers to federal funding access.
A committee of environmental justice leaders will guide grant awards, enabling communities to apply for subgrants to support projects such as local clean-ups, disaster resiliency, workforce development, air quality improvement, and illegal dumping prevention.

Social Work Professor Byron Parker Awarded 3-Year Grant to Address Substance Use Disorders | |
Social Work Professor Byron Parker was recently awarded a 3-year grant to address substance use disorders through the expansion of workforce capacity.
The Department of Social Work at Texas Southern University (TSU) is one of ten social work programs in the country to receive the 3-year grant, funded by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Opioid Response Network (ORN), to participate in the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Substance Use Disorders Education and Leadership Scholars (SUDEALS) Program.
The SUDEALS program will incentivize and enhance the social work profession’s workforce capacity in the substance use disorders area of specialized practice.
As the grant writer, principal investigator, and program director for the project, Professor Parker will be responsible for managing a cohort of social work students and cultivating their competence in social work specializing in substance use disorders through practice and research.
This grant will allow TSU to select twelve Social Work students over the next three years, to participate in the Council on Social Work Education’s SUDEALS Program. Each student will receive funding and travel support to participate in the annual summer Council on Social Work Education Fellows Forum in Washington, D.C. In addition, the selected students will obtain specialized knowledge about substance use disorders through a social work elective course designed and taught by Professor Parker. This grant also provides Professor Parker with funding annually for specialized professional development.
“We are so proud of Mr. Parker and his tireless dedication to teaching and mentoring our students, so that they have the knowledge and skills to be successful in the 21st century behavioral health workforce,” said Dr. Nicole Willis, TSU Social Work Department Chair.
Professor Parker is a seasoned social work educator, community organizer, published author, and current president of the Association of Black Social Workers-Houston Chapter.

Alumnus Cameron Flowers Appointed to Provost Office's Executive Director for Strategic Partnerships and Academic Advocacy |
Cameron Flowers, a proud Texas Southern University (TSU) alumnus, is making waves as the newly appointed Executive Director for Strategic Partnerships and Academic Advocacy in the Office of the Provost. Previously serving as a consultant for Career Pathways in the Office of Career Services, Cameron has consistently demonstrated his commitment to fostering student success.
During his time in Career Services, he streamlined processes, organized impactful career fairs, and introduced innovative technologies to enhance professional development for TSU students. His dedication and achievements led to his current role, where he now supports university-wide initiatives and strategic projects that prioritize holistic student success.
For Cameron, working at TSU is deeply personal. “Some of my best years were on this campus,” he shared. “The faculty, staff, and leadership poured into me in ways I couldn’t imagine, and I’m forever grateful. Being able to give back and help others along the way is my way of paying it forward.” Cameron continues to approach his work with purpose, focusing on initiatives that help students excel both in and out of the classroom. One of his most cherished memories is advocating for a student on a judicial advisory committee and later witnessing that student graduate—a reminder of the lasting impact of meaningful mentorship.
Cameron’s advice to current Tigers is simple yet powerful: “Trust your process. It’s okay to pivot and adjust when things don’t go as planned. Believe in yourself, stay the course, and don’t let obstacles deter you. Hard work and perseverance will align you with the opportunities meant for you.” Cameron’s journey at TSU, both as a student and now as a leader, is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and a commitment to excellence.
