FEATURED ITEM

Election-Day, 8th November. 1864.

The father of American political cartoons, Thomas Nast, celebrated Abraham Lincolns presidential election victory in 1864 with an engraving of four allegorical figures. In this detail, the woman on the right wears a robe, with a sword and a shield at her side, the shield decorated with the American flag. She casts a ballot into a round ballot box. Across from her is a robed and winged woman with a pin on her chest that reads “Peace.” Behind her are two winged figures with swords labeled Southern Rebellion and Traitors North. See the engraving up close and learn more about Thomas Nast.
