FEATURED ITEM

Drawings from the South Pacific During WWII

Air combat intelligence officer John Noble was serving in the South Pacific during World War II when he wrote a series of letters to his young children. He illustrated the letters with exquisite and colorful drawings. In this birthday letter to his son Sandy, he drew a landscape with a hut and canoe.

“The funny looking boat in the water is an outrigger canoe that their Papa used to go fishing in. The mast and sail were very much like the Dipsy Doodle's, but you can't see them in the picture because they are put away in the little house.”

—John Noble to Sandy Noble, 15 April 1944
