KK&W Retained

for BHA Executive Director Search

Dear Bald Head Association Residents:

As you know from prior communications, the BHA has recently had several personnel changes that have led us to now recruiting a new Executive Director. While doing so, we’ve had the good fortune of engaging Russ Curtis, a longtime community and club industry general manager, to provide interim leadership to ensure we continue to provide service and coordination with our residents and team. Please stop by the offices and meet Russ or call him if you have any needs or questions; he’s readily available and is working with the Team to continue to enhance our services, responsiveness and to continue to make BHA a wonderful place to live!

Since our previous communication, the Board has engaged Kopplin Kuebler & Wallace (KK&W), a nationally recognized community and club industry executive recruitment firm who has worked with many communities and clubs in the area and nationally to recruit for similar roles and have previously assisted the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club with their general manager searches. They know our island well and will help identify and recruit a top professional to lead the BHA’s staff and help the Board and members continue to shape and achieve our Community’s vision for years to come. With a national network, comprehensive knowledge of our community and the industry, we are confident that KK&W will find an executive who will appreciate our community culture and will have the energy and enthusiasm to help BHA continue to be one of the premier island communities in the country.

In addition to having successfully placed top professionals at other similar communities like Kiawah Island Community Association, Haig Point on Dafuskie Island, and most of the communities in the greater Hilton Head market, amongst many others, KK&W have worked with iconic and nationally recognized communities around the country and many more to attract top professionals. They know the industry and they will know BHA and its team quite well being on site soon to further acquaint themselves with what has been achieved since last here a few years ago.

The process with KK&W has commenced and they have put together a deliberate timeline that will allow them to recruit top candidates over the next several weeks, leading to likely interviews in early January. We’ll periodically update you during that process.

A Search Committee comprised of Board Members Elizabeth Robinson, Steve Smalley, and BHA Members Suzanne O’Bryant and Slaughter Fitz-Hugh; overseen by Christine Osborne, President and Russ Curtis, Interim Executive Director. I will work closely with KK&W on this effort, eventually leading to full Board involvement. While we’re very confident in their networking abilities and connections to top industry professionals, they have encouraged us that there are times when recommendations from the membership have resulted in identifying strong potential candidates as well. Therefore, should you have someone you believe could be a good ‘fit’ to lead our great community, you may certainly make your recommendation know to one of the search executives directly. Kurt Kuebler, Partner, (kurt@kkandw.com) and Brad Baecht (brad@kkandw.com) are actively leading this recruitment and will personally follow up on any resident suggestions offered to them.

We appreciate your support and understanding during this transition. In the meantime, as always, you may share your ideas and concerns with the Board. We will provide periodic updates to all members and staff as we reach major milestones throughout the recruitment and hiring process, which is being done on a very detailed and process oriented timeline.

Thank you for your continued support of our great Community!

Sincerely,

Christine Osborne, President

On Behalf of the Board of Directors: Joe Brawner, Paul Carey, John Kinney, Steve Smalley, and Elizabeth Robinson.

Board Nominations

Bald Head Association (BHA’s) Bylaws describe two paths for individuals to run for election to the organization’s Board of Directors. The first path is through the Nominating Committee, which traditionally meets throughout the summer months to identify prospective candidates. The Committee then informs BHA’s current Board of Directors of the candidates at its regular September Board meeting. More information about the candidates will be available in upcoming Compass e-bulletins, as well as in the Annual Meeting packet that will be mailed in December.

If someone wants to be considered by the membership for Board service and is not identified through the Nominating Committee process, BHA’s Bylaws identify an alternative path through self-nomination: “A petition signed by a minimum of fifteen (15) individual property owners, advocating a nominee for election to the Board of Directors, may be submitted to the Association office no later than sixty (60) days prior to the annual meeting and this candidate or candidates shall be added to the final ballot which will be mailed to the membership no less than thirty (30) days in advance of the annual meeting.”

The 60-day deadline for receipt of petitions this year is November 26, 2024. Of course, that date is the final deadline, and submissions can be sent any time prior to the deadline. Note that all Board candidates are required to complete a biography/questionnaire and send a headshot photo for publication in BHA’s Annual Report and on BHA’s website to help inform members of candidates’ credentials. With a tight print deadline, all biography/questionnaires and photos must be received by 4:00pm on December 2, 2024.

All who are interested in submitting a petition can drop it off at the office (111 Lighthouse Wynd) or call the office at 910-457-4676 x21 with questions.

Operation Re-Forest — We Forest

Now that fall has arrived, Operation Re-Forest — We Forest preparations are in motion. This year’s planting day will be in early January. If you’d like to order trees in conjunction with this operation, stay tuned for more updates about ordering.

BHA began this operation in 2019 to help mitigate Bald Head Island’s tree losses from previous storms, such as Hurricane Florence in 2018 as well as our recent PTC #8. BHA will order trees in early December and bring them to Bald Head Island for planting on BHA Common Area.

BHA encourages property owners to participate in “Operation Re-Forest — We Forest” in one of four ways:

  • Take advantage of BHA’s bulk order cost and Island delivery to plant trees on your own lot.
  • Plant trees as part of your tree mitigation with the Architectural Review Committee (ARC).
  • Plant a tree on your own lot to honor a loved one.
  • Purchase a live oak tree in honor of a loved one to be planted on BHA Common Area.

Check out the Operation Re-Forest — We Forest map and list of honorees on BHA’s website at www.BaldHeadAssociation.com/re-forest.
