A Year in Review - State of the College 2023-24 from Dr. Ann Bieber

As we enter the fall semester, we reflect not only on the past few years, but also on how these challenges and opportunities have changed us and solidified our mission to help students achieve their goals. Thanks to your hard work and dedication, we have continued to meet the needs of our students, and offer them opportunities to change their lives and support and guide them on their path. Linked for your review is A Year in Review - State of the College 2023-24, which details the outstanding work of all of us and initiatives that prioritize continuous improvement. Thank you for all you do on behalf of LCCC and our students.

LCCC Welcomes Students for New Academic Year

Faculty and staff welcomed students to campus for the 2024-2025 academic year.

LCCC Early College Student from Parkland Named Leader of Promise

LCCC Early College student Healley Saltz has been selected as a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to complete her associate degree.

Healley is a psychology major at LCCC and is expected to graduate in May 2025. She hopes to then transfer to a four-year university in Pennsylvania to earn her bachelor’s degree and ultimately attend law school to study to become a civil rights attorney.

At LCCC, she is finance chair of the Student Government Association, vice president of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter and editor of the Paw Print student newspaper. She is a student from the Parkland School District.

The Leaders of Promise Scholarship, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, recognizes 200 Phi Theta Kappa members with awards totaling $200,000. Phi Theta Kappa is the academic honor society of community colleges. A panel of independent judges selected this year’s recipients from nearly 1,500 applicants. Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars are selected based on outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated leadership potential.

“I am incredibly grateful to be a Coca-Cola Scholarship recipient. To me, this not only eases my financial worries over college, but also serves as a significant morale booster as I continue to apply for additional scholarships,” says Healley. As encouragement to future students, she says, “Stay persistent, allow yourself grace to take a break every once in a while, and remember to always keep your goals in sight.”

Former Pittsburgh Steeler and Army War Veteran Gives Motivational Talk for LCCC Fundraiser

The hard lessons former NFL running back Rocky Bleier learned early in life helped him to overcome adversity and reach his goals both on and off the football field. This former Pittsburgh Steelers teammate will share his message in a motivational evening on Monday, Nov. 4, sponsored by the Lehigh Carbon Community College Foundation. Proceeds will benefit scholarships for veterans. The event will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Glasbern Inn in Fogelsville.

Bleier played football at the University of Notre Dame, and with a National Championship under his belt, was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in later rounds to play professionally. However, toward the end of his rookie season, he was drafted by the United States Army and sent to Vietnam. When his platoon ran into an ambush, he suffered severe rifle and grenade wounds that damaged his legs and feet.

Doctors were certain he could never play football again, but Bleier overcame his injuries through therapy. He rejoined the Steelers and went on to star in the NFL, playing for 12 seasons and in four Super Bowls. He eventually retired from football and today applies his experiences and attitudes toward meeting challenges and achieving goals in today’s business.

The evening will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and heavy hors d’oeuvres. Bleier’s talk will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude with questions and answers and an opportunity to purchase his book and have it signed.

Tickets to the event are $75 per person. For additional information, contact JoEllen Rooney, LCCC alumni and events manager, at JRooney@lccc.edu or 610-799-1929.

PPL Foundation Video to Spotlight HVACR Lab's Environmentally Friendly Practices

The PPL Foundation was on the Schnecksville campus on Friday, Aug. 2, producing a video that highlights the new equipment in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration lab that was purchased through a $17,000 grant. The “PPL Empowering Communities” grant supports phasing out the use of harmful chlorofluorocarbons. With funding from PPL, LCCC will upgrade its HVAC lab over a five-year period to incorporate newer and more environmentally sound practices within its curriculum and lab instruction, such as the use of CO2 and HCs and other biofuels.
