Congratulations Class of 2024
The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University (WHC) celebrated the graduating class of 2024 with its annual Medallion Ceremony. This year, the ceremony recognized the achievements of 112 newly minted WHC alumni. In order to graduate through the WHC program, students must complete a rigorous honors thesis where they do original scientific research or produce a scholarly creative work. During the Medallion Ceremony, the students received a special certificate and medallion to recognize their hard work and determination in completing their theses. In addition, eight students Âearned 2024 Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College Awards and 22 students were recognized for outstanding theses.

$1M for Alzheimer's Research
Three Florida Atlantic University researchers at the forefront of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research have each received a $350,000 grant from the Florida Department of Health’s “Ed and Ethel Moore Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program.” With this funding, their research will shed light on the biological functions of AD by taking advantage of synthetic chemistry strategies; provide an innovative online screening tool for older drivers with cognitive decline; and gain a deeper understanding of the role of brain cholesterol in AD. The researchers, Mare Cudic, Ph.D., Ruth Tappen, Ed.D., and Qi Zhang, Ph.D. are members of the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute.

Innovation Pilot Awards
FAU's Office of Technology Development recently announced the first faculty recipients of its Innovation Pilot Awards. Robert J. Stackman Jr., Ph.D. and Claire A. Rice, Ph.D. earned a pilot award for research into an innovative treatment for schizophrenia. Georgios Sklivanitis, Ph.D. received a pilot award for a project to build the "Internet of Floating Things."

Arbor Day
FAU’s Center for Environmental Studies and the Jupiter campus hosted the annual Arbor Day Celebration at the Robert J. Huckshorn Arboretum. The campus celebrated 14 years with the Tree Campus Higher Education distinction from the Arbor Day Foundation.
This year's theme was biodiversity with guest speakers Brian Nichols, Ph.D. from the College of Education, Kelsie Bernot, Ph.D. from the Wilkes Honors College and Alana Edwards from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. After the program, guests were invited to explore the arboretum with a poetry walk where nature-themed poems were sprinkled throughout the walkways.

Senior Research Symposium
Seventeen students from FAU High School – Jupiter Campus were recognized for extraordinary academic achievements at the Senior Research Symposium held at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience. During the symposium, seniors shared posters and oral presentations of their research. The achievements of this year’s graduating class include more than $7,350 in grant funding to support their research and multiple prestigious awards, including the Barry Goldwater Scholar Award, The Stan and Renee Wimberly Scholar award, and “Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher of the Year,” awarded by FAU’s College of Social Work and Criminal Justice.

Academy of Community Inclusion
FAU’s Academy of Community Inclusion (ACI) hosted a celebratory brunch and special presentation for students and their families at the John D. MacArthur Campus. The event celebrated the graduation of two ACI students, Whitney Wiley and Michael R. Johnson Jr. In addition to highlighting the graduates’ achievements, the event honored Michael Brady, Ph.D., founding principal investigator of the ACI program. ACI is designed for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through the academy, students earn skill-based certificates that foster independence and workforce readiness. The goal of the program is for students to graduate with a part-time job in their community.

NeuroExplorers
In May, the latest crop of Junior Neuroscientists completed the NeuroExplorers program. The Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute's Advancing STEM: Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery (ASCEND) program hosts the semester-long after school learning opportunity where middle schoolers are introduced to the wonders of the brain with lessons taught by professional neuroscientists.

Welcome Zeiss
ZEISS Microscopy hosted a grand opening for its new ZEISS Solutions Center on the John D. MacArthur Campus. The center, located on the third floor of the Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, will provide cutting-edge training on advanced scientific microscopes to experts from around the globe and gives researchers and students from FAU, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and the Wertheim UF Scripps Institute access to top imaging tools.
