Texas Southern University (TSU) was proud to participate in the AfroTech Conference, hosted in Houston for the first time! This dynamic event brought together over 200,000 Black professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators, creating an inspiring and empowering environment for our students, alumni, faculty, and staff.


From engaging with industry leaders and peers to attending workshops on cutting-edge technology, entrepreneurship, and diversity in tech, our attendees gained invaluable insights and built connections that could shape their professional futures.


The celebration of Black excellence throughout the conference reinforced the importance of representation and innovation in technology. TSU is proud to be part of this transformative moment, driving conversations that empower our community to lead with purpose and confidence.

President's Corner

President Crawford dedicated his bi-weekly video remarks to honoring the life of fallen Tiger Marcelo "Ox" Garcia III. Marcelo, a beloved TSU alumnus and former baseball player, tragically lost his life in the line of duty as a dedicated Houston firefighter on November 6. Marcelo was a cherished member of the TSU family. The collective thoughts and prayers of the TSU community are with his family and friends.

Be part of this exciting event in Los Angeles, CA, featuring James W. Crawford III, Texas Southern University’s 14th President, as he shares his vision for the future of TSU. Speed Dating: Meet Your Major Meet Your Path

The Speed Dating: Meet Your Major, Meet Your Path event brought First-Year Tigers together at the TSU Rec for an engaging afternoon focused on academic and personal success. Attendees had the unique opportunity to connect with deans, advisors, and alumni during rapid, one-on-one sessions, gaining valuable insights into majors, pathways, and opportunities tailored to their goals. The networking session that followed allowed students to solidify connections and build their support teams. This impactful event empowered participants to plan their journey toward the 30-credit milestone and beyond, fostering confidence and clarity in their transition from freshman to sophomore status. 

Center for Transformative Health Hosts COVID Symposium

On November 21st, the Navigating the Aftermath: Understanding COVID Impact and Addressing Health Disparities in Post-Pandemic Recovery Symposium, hosted by the Center for Transformative Health Research Institute and Harris County Public Health, brought together experts, policymakers, and advocates for a critical exploration of COVID-19’s ongoing impact. This insightful event featured engaging discussions on the long-term health implications of the pandemic, strategies to address emerging health disparities, and opportunities for collaboration on actionable solutions. It was a vital step in understanding the challenges we face and shaping a path toward equitable recovery."

TSU Student Joins Netflix Hit Show

 

Exciting news! Meet Lil J Sean, a sophomore psych major from Houston, Texas, who’s taking the stage on the second season of Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow! 🎤✨


Blending his love for literature and psychology into his music, J is ready to share his unique sound with the world. Catch the premiere on Wednesday, November 20th, with judges Latto, Ludacris, and DJ Khaled! Let’s all come together and cheer on our fellow Tiger and wish him well during the competition!

TSU Board of Regents Launches Education Leadership Fellowship Program

TSU continues to elevate and innovate. This year, we launched our first-ever Education Leadership Fellowship Program, a pioneering initiative established by Board of Regents Chairman Brandon L. Simmons. Our inaugural cohort, Joseph Johnson and Ayana McLemore, are engaging in impactful initiatives to shape the future landscape of our University. KTSU Hosts: Mosaic: Colors of Culture Pt. II: A Night of Music, Art, and Remembrance

KTSU 90.9FM’s Mosaic: Colors of Culture Pt. II was a resounding success, captivating the hearts of Houston audiences on November 22nd. The event, held at the historic Rockefeller’s Houston, was a celebration of music, art, and the power of community.


The night featured electrifying performances by a stellar lineup of artists, including BJ The Chicago Kid, Stout, Bilal, and Chris Dave & The Drumhedz. Texas Southern University students from the A.C.C.E.S.S. program played a vital role in the event’s success, gaining valuable hands-on experience and contributing to the overall atmosphere. Verizon Open House Hosts 200 Middle School Students for STEM Activities

TSU recently hosted the Verizon Innovative Learners STEM Achievers Program Open House. This event brought 200 middle school students from Fort Bend ISD and Houston ISD to campus for hands-on STEM activities, fostering a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math. Applications for the Verizon Innovative Learners STEM Achievers Program summer camp will open in the spring. Dr. Gwendolyn Goodwin leads Five Students to Prestigious Dwight D. Eisenhower Fellowships

Dr. Crockem and Dr. Manns Present at Annual NWCCU Conference

Dr. Raijanel Crockem and Dr. Derrick Manns recently presented at the annual Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) conference in Seattle, Washington, alongside colleagues from Utah Valley University (UVU). Their session on “Improving Equitable Outcomes” highlighted the results of their participation in the NWCCU and SACSCOC Data Equity Fellowship. TSU’s project focused on identifying equity gaps by analyzing student persistence and graduation rates, particularly for first-generation students and those eligible for Pell Grants. The findings emphasize the need for targeted resources to support these groups more effectively. Dr. Crockem noted, "Although we are an HBCU, there is much diversity among the students we serve, and we must be mindful to support all students with right-sized resources." Dr. Zuri Dale Featured at AfroTech

Dr. Zuri Dale, one of our very own Tigers was featured at an AfroTech Conference event this week alongside a lineup of other Black creators and innovators. When Dr. Dale is not working to combat poor health outcomes and preventing the spread of infectious diseases, she is using her expertise in the sciences to merge art and science. From an AfroTech feature in 2023 to an AfroTech stage in 2024, Dr. Dale, who is also a TSU alumna, continues to show the best in excellence in achievement.

Women's Soccer are 2024 SWAC Regular Season Champions

TSU Football Close Out 2024 Season Strong, Win Season Finale 31-23


Texas Southern closed out the 2024 season on a positive note as they won back-to-back games at the end of the season for the first time since 1979 after defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 31-23 Saturday afternoon.

  

TSU finished with 383 total offensive yards as they held UAPB to 275 yards of offense. Wilson passed for 169 yards and a touchdown while Quinn rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 17 attempts. Leary caught seven receptions for 78 yards while Charles George led the Tigers with 17 tackles.

 

TSU closed out the 2024 season with five wins as it marked the most wins since 2022.
