Grand Opening of Georgina's new Multi-use Recreation Complex (MURC)

The grand opening celebration of the new Multi-use Recreation Complex (MURC) is less than a month away and today, Council received an update –  

  • The grand opening celebration will take place on Saturday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Opening day will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free family activities.
  • Visit the website for exclusive opportunities to participate in the grand opening. You could be chosen to jump in the pool, hit a pickleball, shoot a basketball, create a button, decorate a tumbler or take a walk on the walking track at the grand opening.
  • Swimming opportunities will be available on March 2 during the grand opening celebration, preregistration is required. To secure your spot, don’t delay and register online today.
  • Watch for new recreation programs and activities including 55+ basketball, indoor lacrosse, kindergym, fitness circuit opportunities and fitness equipment including bikes, a rower, Stairmaster and more. 
  • Coming soon! Unlimited access to indoor drop-in play with the new Rec Pass which can be purchased for yourself or a household.
  • Free ‘try it’ activities throughout the month of March will allow the public to try their hand at a variety of things.
  • The Discovery Branch Library features a reading garden, maker space, creativity lab, and music and video lab, as well as new programs including 3D printer workshops, wood engraving workshops, video and sound editing workshops, and more.
  • Room rentals will be available starting in April for the MURC and the Discovery Branch Library.

Off-road vehicles

The Town has started a pilot project to allow the use of licensed off-road vehicles on Town roads within the Waterfront Park Buffer Zone and the Ward 5 catchment area. This is in effect until April 15 to allow people to access Lake Simcoe for ice fishing. Off-road vehicles are allowed under certain conditions found in the by-law.

Family Day in Georgina

The Town of Georgina wishes everyone a Happy Family Day! Be sure to check out the fun Family Day activities available at the Georgina Ice Palace, Georgina Leisure Pool, Sutton Arena and the ROC. The Civic Centre will be closed on Monday, Feb. 19. Recycling will move to one day later for the week of Feb. 19.

Black History Month at Georgina Public Library

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate, honour and reflect on Black individuals and communities' stories, experiences, and accomplishments. The Georgina Public Library offers a variety of programs and discussions to recognize this meaningful month. Learn about the timeline of Black Canadian history, find out about allyship and what it means, and hear from author Kern Carter.

Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Swim

Bring your sweetheart for a swim at the Georgina Leisure Pool from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13 and they swim for free during the Valentine’s Day Sweetheart public swim. Pre-registration is recommended.

Taste of Georgina

Between Feb. 23 and March 7, you’re invited to experience the Town’s prix fixe food event that will awaken your taste buds and allow you to explore a variety of local cuisines. Each of the participating restaurants throughout Georgina will prepare special menus that showcase their offerings, so bring some excitement to the table and feel good about doing your part to support local businesses.

Dive into the thrill of the annual Cardboard Toboggan Race on Saturday, March 9, at the ROC. Craft your ultimate cardboard toboggan, register it and race down the hill for a day of pure fun. Awards will be given to the fastest, farthest travelled, most creative, largest and the "ROC" bottom. Don't miss the excitement – join us for a day filled with creativity, competition and memorable moments.

Parking Pass

It’s never too early to get your resident parking pass. Residents and property owners can apply using the Town’s online portal and get the parking pass immediately. The process is easy and residents can get up to four passes per household. Parking passes must be displayed on the dashboard while parked in areas where required by signage.

ROC Tube for $25

Ready for winter fun? The ROC has you covered. Tube, ski or snowboard for $25 for two hours. Open Wednesdays to Fridays, from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Grab your friends and family and join us for an unforgettable winter at the ROC.

Winter operations

Winter has arrived. The Town is committed to providing a consistent level of snow removal service throughout the winter season. Using a combination of Town staff and contractors, plowing, sanding and salting is performed each winter with consideration to safety, environmental and budgetary concerns. The Town's online winter operations tracker is live. It allows residents to see where the snowplows are during snow clearing. Keep the roads and sidewalks clear. Winter parking restrictions are in effect until April 15, meaning no parking between the hours of 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Stormwater ponds

With colder temperatures, a reminder that stormwater ponds will freeze and they are not to be used as skating rinks. They are not intended or designed for recreational use as water levels can change rapidly and create unsafe conditions. This is extremely dangerous and poses many safety risks for residents.
