The City of Greater Sudbury - News and Updates

A Message From the Mayor

The holidays can be a special time of year. Many of us take the opportunity to celebrate cherished traditions, enjoy great food, and gather with family and friends.

Last week, I hosted my second annual Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony at Tom Davies Square, with performances from Black Bull Moose Singers and Nickel City Sound – and complimentary cookies and hot chocolate to stay warm while enjoying the outdoor festivities!

Of course, decorating a tree is just one way to celebrate; across our city, Greater Sudbury residents observe and celebrate the holiday season in many different forms.

The holidays can also be a hard time for people. Some may not be spending the holidays with loved ones or have recently lost a loved one. Some might be finding it hard financially, and some may be hard at work serving the community on the frontlines.

So, let’s remember to be compassionate and kind to one another. We can all spread holiday spirit and cheer. No matter how you celebrate, may you have a season of joy and peace.

The holidays are also a time to reflect on the past year and recognize those who have made positive contributions to our lives. I would like to sincerely thank all City staff for your tireless efforts and dedication to making our community the best place to live, work, and play.

Mayor Paul Lefebvre

Prepared to Hit the Slopes?

As we countdown the days until opening day, make sure you're prepared for the 2024 ski season.

Whether a beginner or a pro, you can keep active when the cold weather hits by skiing or snowboarding at our hills. Adanac Ski Hill offers a variety of ski and snowboard programs for people ages four and up. We pride ourselves on being a learning hill where members of the public can get great ski and snowboard instruction.

Check out our Mini Shredder and Mini Vikings group lessons for children ages four to six.

Be a "Wrap Star" this Holiday Season

These wrapping tips will be easier on your wallet and the environment!

  • Reuse gift bags, bows and tissue paper, or repurpose materials such as packing paper, newspaper, or cloth items for wrapping.
  • If purchasing gift wrap, choose recyclable gift wrap made only of paper (foil or plastic types are not accepted in the Blue Box).
  • Use sprigs of evergreen or cinnamon sticks instead of bows or ribbons to top your gifts.
  • Remove plastic or rope handles before recycling old paper gift bags.
  • Put gift tissue paper that cannot be reused in the Green Cart, not the Blue Box.

How to Avoid Porch Pirates

While the holidays are quickly approaching and many of us are getting packages delivered to our door, the Greater Sudbury Police Service reminds us that thieves may see unattended packages as a crime of opportunity.

Here are some tips on how to protect your packages from porch pirates:

  • Always track your package so you know when it is out for delivery or has been delivered.

  • If you have the option, have your package delivered to your work.

  • Have your package delivered to the home of a relative or friend that you know will be home.

  • Install surveillance equipment.

After School Youth Centres

Did you know there are free youth centres across Greater Sudbury for youth ages 10 to 18 to participate in after school? Youth Centres allow young people to drop in and participate in various supervised activities.

Centres offer a wide range of activities, including sports, billiards, video games, movie nights, chat time, and guest presentations on current issues. Centres offer internet access, homework assistance, peer mentoring, and educational workshops that will encourage making healthy life choices. The sites connect youth with the local community, encouraging volunteerism to make a difference.
