Copper and Brain Health
A new study from FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute discovered a compelling link between copper regulation and neural health. Copper plays an important role in the function and viability of mitochondria—the powerhouse of the cell—and helps protect cells from harmful molecules that can damage proteins and DNA. Findings from this study suggest that copper deficiencies can lead to neurological issues and that maintaining adequate copper levels could be important for brain health.

Fulbright Specialist Award
Gregg Fields, Ph.D., FAU’s Interim Vice President for Research, was recently selected to the highly competitive Fulbright Specialist Program. Fulbright Specialists engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at host institutions across the globe, based on the grantee’s expertise and the needs of the receiving country. As a grantee, Fields will share his unique knowledge in medical science, which seamlessly blends biology, chemistry and groundbreaking treatment strategies for conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease.

FAU CARD Research Grant
For a third consecutive year, the FAU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities in the College of Education was awarded a one-year research grant from the Florida Development Disabilities Council to continue to focus on creating and delivering training sessions for law enforcement officers and first responders, equipping them with a broad range of techniques to effectively and empathetically engage with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual and developmental disabilities.

New Scholarship Opportunity
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science has announced two new scholarship opportunities. The WLW-ECOS Student Success Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to College of Science undergraduate students in their junior and senior year with financial need. The WLW-ECOS Semester by the Sea Scholarship provides financial support to students who participate in this unique, one-semester program offered by Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the Department of Biological Sciences.

Join the NAMIWalk Team
FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute's NeuroSquad is walking to raise awareness and erase the stigma associated with mental illness through brain science research, education and outreach programs in the community. This year's "NAMIWalk" for Palm Beach County will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 from 8 to 11 a.m. at John Prince Park in Lake Worth. All funds raised from the event directly support the mission of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Palm Beach County to provide support, education and advocacy to individuals and families throughout the community. Faculty, staff, students and friends of Florida Atlantic are encouraged to join the NeuroSquad's walking team and/or donate.

It's time to capture brilliance for the 6th annual Art of Science Contest - open to all faculty, staff, students and postdocs to submit photos and videos of their research, scholarship and creative activity. TechSeries at FAU offers expert feedback, guidance, and pitch samples to help you access capital for technology commercialization and proof of concept.
Steps:
1. Submit a 500-word abstract (with non-proprietary information);
2. Receive feedback and a sample pitch reports;
3. Participate in the three sessions to refine your pitch (October 4, 11 and 18, noon-1 p.m.)
4. Let's work on your proposal to be submitted to a selected sponsor.

This year's Starry Nights Author Series begins with Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Egan. Egan has authored numerous novels, including New York Times bestseller “Manhattan Beach,” which was awarded the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction; and a “Visit from the Goon Squad,” winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. In addition to her literary work, Egan has been a contributing journalist for New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker and has served as artist-in-residence in the English department at the University of Pennsylvania, where she has taught courses in 19th and 20th century literature.
