This year’s FAU Student Talon Leadership Award was presented to Kaylia Cooper, an undergraduate researcher in the Honors in Biological Sciences program within the Charles E. Cooper is the founding director of the Medi-Futures FAU Virtual Shadowing Program, which helps students connect with various health professionals and enables them to learn from seasoned experts in their field. More than 200 Charles E. Schmidt College of Science students attended the Science Sophomore Social Oct. 26, on the Boca Raton campus. The annual event, hosted by the Schmidt College of Science’s Student Services and Advising Office and Pre-Health Professions Office, connects transitioning students from University Advising Services (UAS) to the Schmidt College of Science. 'Nature on PBS' Showcases Leatherback Sea Turtle Research | |
The PBS episode of "Wild Hope" released on Nov. 27, features the groundbreaking research taking place at FAU's Marine Science Lab, including how FAU scientists are pioneering new ways to learn about the 20-30 years leatherback sea turtles spend at sea before returning to the beach to nest. Using new, miniaturized satellite tags, scientists are hoping to reveal the mysteries of the leatherbacks’ so-called “lost years.” Watch video. | |

Hobbie, Ph.D., visited Florida Atlantic to speak about the dramatic influence of nutrient pollution in urban waterways on Nov. 2. Managing excess nutrients remains a major obstacle to improving ecosystem service benefits of urban waters, which Hobbie is studying. Advancing ecosystem-level understanding of urban watersheds generates insights that promote novel solutions to solving urban water quality challenges that impact communities around the world. How Do Rising Sea Levels Affect Florida's Drinking Water? | |
Learn about how Florida's growing population relies mostly on groundwater for drinking water. This groundwater is found in porous, limestone aquifers that saltwater can easily infiltrate as sea levels rise. The salty water is unsuitable for drinking without costly treatment. The Science Fest undergraduate student poster presentation competition includes the Dr. Eric Shaw Excellence in Science Undergraduate Research Awards: $1,000 for first place, $600 for second place, and $400 for third place, generously sponsored by Dr. Eric Shaw. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to showcase their research projects and innovations relating to a specific discipline within the Schmidt College of Science. The Jumpstart Postdoctoral Program aims to stimulate synergy between faculty and postdoctoral associates and encourage greater multidisciplinary collaboration.
