Uprooted Exhibition On View
Loisaida Center – 710 E 9th Street, New York, NY 10009
October 5th – November 2nd
| |
|
Uprooted is currently on view at the Loisaida Center from October 5th – November 2nd. To view, stop by the center Monday – Friday from 10am – 5pm or by appointment.
Uprooted explores the disconnect immigrants, migrants and the children of immigrants experience in the multitude of spaces and cultures they occupy. We’ve gathered multiple lens-based artists that have developed projects exploring their roots. Through their work, we are able to see the impact immigration has on people from varying backgrounds. We are able to see the different ways in which artists acknowledge and honor their ancestry.
The exhibition highlights themes of identity, ancestry, assimilation, erasure, and belonging through the lens of multiple New York City based photographers. Through exhibition, the collective diaspora is actively reclaiming their roots, challenging and redefining what it means to be American, exploring methods in which the celebration of multiculturalism can keep customs intact, and honoring their collective diversity.
Participating Artists
Kamal Badhey, Wendy Correa, Cristina Ferrigno, Lissy Alta, Judyta Grudzien, Roxana Hurtado, Maylyn 'Zero' Iglesias, Ryan John Lee, Destiny Mata, Carmen Mojica.
Check out some photos from the opening reception on October 5th!

Loisa is bringing puro sabor to the Latin kitchen with upgraded seasoning blends, spices, and cooking sauces - and they're just getting started. Loisa is a Latin-owned business born out of the homes of co-founders Kenny Luna and Scott Hattis. As they both prepared to start families, they embarked on a mission to make Sazón and Adobo without artificial ingredients so that they could proudly pass on their families' Dominican heritage foods onto their children. The name Loisa was inspired by Loisaida and the products its community uses to cook their food every day.
For Latin Heritage Month, they've introduced a month-long celebration, called "Somos Nueva York", where they're spotlighting the incredible and integral contributions of the Latin community to the food, culture, history, and fabric of New York City. Our favorite chef and La Cocina de Loisaida instructor, María Bído, is one of the features! Read the full article via the link below. And if you missed the Loisaida Center being featured as Loisa's 2% for Justice Recipient, check out the blog post here.

"This Flavor Profile is part of a series of features where we're elevating the stories of notable members of our community here in Nueva York that continue to push our cultura forward. We hope you enjoy their stories and we encourage you to explore their work.
Meet Puerto Rican chef María Bído, as she describes how her love for Latin food has shaped her life and career."

LMCC Artistic Residencies
Deadline: Tuesday, October 31st, 2023
The 2024 Arts Center Residency provides five-month studio residencies at LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island for mid-career artists and creative practitioners to engage in research and experimentation. The residency supports artists who are currently in need of studio space to further their process-oriented practice and is well-suited to those who would benefit from space and time for creative development and interdisciplinary collaboration in the retreat-like setting of Governors Island.
SU-CASA is LMCC’s creative aging program that offers participatory arts projects at senior centers across Manhattan. Selected artists receive a stipend of $6,000 and materials budget to design and conduct in-person arts workshops with partnering centers from January to June 2024. Embodying the positive impact of creativity and social engagement on healthy aging, SU-CASA is well-suited for artists interested in building process-based classes and facilitating hands-on participation of older adults and individuals of diverse abilities.
