Quote of the Week

Rosh Hashanah

"Newness makes us uncomfortable because we get used to things the way they are. Judaism uses the beginning of a new year to embrace newness on every level, to the point at which we see ourselves as New, and therefore, able to be different and better than we were in the past."

- Rabbi Daniel Graber, Forest Hills JC

High Holiday Options

New York Metro Region

Rosh Hashanah begins this year on the evening of Friday, September 14th. Yom Kippur begins on the evening of September 24th.(Design by Mollie Suss)

The High Holidays in New York

(New York Jewish Week) Labor Day Weekend signals two things: The end of the summer and, for the Jewish community, the onset of the High Holidays. On Rosh Hashanah, a two-day holiday that begins on the evening of Sept. 15, Jews usher in the New Year of 5784. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, begins with the Kol Nidre service on the evening of Sept. 24 and continues through sundown on Sept. 25. Not a member of a synagogue or not sure how you’re going to mark the holidays this year? Not to worry. The New York Jewish Week has put together a list of local options, ranging from traditional synagogue services and family-friendly programs to volunteer opportunities and comedy shows.

Looking to order Rosh Hashanah dinner in NYC? These 15 places can cater your holiday meal.

(New York Jewish Week) —

Fortunately, for those who don’t have the bandwidth this year to cook a holiday meal — for whatever reason, we don’t judge! — there are several restaurants and caterers in New York City preparing Rosh Hashanah meals this year that are available for takeaway or delivery.

Why Join a Men's Club

By Steven Mandel, MD

When my father passed away, it was in the middle of the summer, in the middle of a heat wave. The rabbi said that it would be difficult to mobilize enough people for a minyan. To my surprise, 100+ members of the men’s club showed up. Someone came over to me and said, “I didn’t know your father, but I wanted to be present”.

I have been to many Men’s Club events – Baseball Games, Torah on Tap, Wine Tasting, Building a Sukkah and many more.

This essay is what a FJMC Men’s Club means to me.

ADL/FJMC Recap

March on Washington

Photos: MAR, Seaboard and Western Regions were represented here.

FJMC participated with the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) on the 60th Anniversary of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "March on Washington" on Saturday, August 26, 2023.

The FJMC has a strong and friendly connection with the ADL, and we stand firm in taking action based on our shared Jewish values. Walking together, side by side in this commemorative march was one way to demonstrate those values, practice anti-racism, and stand up to antisemitism.

ADL Summit

"Never Is Now!"

Get The Early Bird Rate Now!

The need to join together to find solutions is urgent. We are tracking an average of ten antisemitic incidents a day. During the decades ADL has been releasing our annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents in the United States, we’ve never seen numbers like that. And consider that 85 percent of Americans today believe at least one anti-Jewish stereotype, up 24% since 2019 — the time to show up is now.

So, we are expanding the largest annual summit on antisemitism and hate to feature four days of powerful programming to Fight Hate for Good, running from March 4-7, 2024. March 4-5 will be special programming by invitation only with general programming March 6-7. We are excited to welcome you all to the Javits Center in New York City to show up, speak out and show strength together at this vital moment.

(Everyday Health) Even if you’re not shuttling kids back to school or in a climate where autumn brings changing leaves and dropping temperatures, there tends to be a shift in our schedules and moods that comes with the start of fall, says Minneapolis-based Lindsay Ogden, a National Academy of Sports Medicine–certified personal trainer and the digital manager for content and coaching at for Life Time, a national fitness company that runs gyms and corporate wellness programs.

Jewish groups launch relief effort for Maui as island’s Jews are among the evacuated

(JTA) — Jewish groups in the United States and in Hawaii are launching relief efforts following the devastation caused by wildfires that have killed more than 50 people so far. The wildfires have all but destroyed the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui, which Hawaii’s Jewish governor, Josh Green, toured with Brian Schatz, the state’s Jewish senator. “What we saw today was likely the largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history,” Green said in a statement. The fires have had consequences for Hawaiians well beyond the fire zone...

Attendees — some of whom grew up religious and have adopted a less observant lifestyle; others who were always secular, and some who are religious — shared the role that ritual plays in their lives.

Making a Minyan in Tel Aviv

A new initiative seeks to connect secular Israelis with Shabbat traditions

(eJewishPhilanthropy) — As the sun sets on a Friday evening in Tel Aviv, strangers trickle into a loft in the heart of Jaffa. They leave their bags — and phones — at the door, per the hosts’ instructions, and grab a glass of wine and begin to mingle. When the 20 invitees — mostly secular Israelis — have arrived, they sit in a circle in the loft’s foyer. A meditation begins, bringing the group together in silence as they welcome the start of Shabbat. Tonight, a host explains in Hebrew, the night’s theme is “ritual,” tying the concept to the week’s Torah portion.

Fall Reading

JBC Bookshelf: Fall 2023

With autumn around the corner, we’re throwing on our sweaters and cracking open these new books. From gorgeous graphic works to enchanting memoirs to captivating fiction, here are books to fall hard for.

Cuban-born, U.S.-based writer and art conservator Rosa Lowinger is the author of "Dwell Time: A Memoir of Art, Exile, and Repair." (Scarlett Freund)

A new memoir tries to mend the pieces of the author’s broken Cuban-Jewish family

(JTA) —  In her recent book, “The Object of Jewish Literature,” Jewish Theological Seminary professor Barbara A. Mann writes about how “literature deploys physical objects as emblems of ideas, emotions, and psychological dramas about the self.” In other words, “things” matter: Furnishings, clothing, food and, in the case of Mann’s study, the glued or sewn-together bundles of paper we call books tell the stories of the people who made, bought and used them.

Some Jewish artists are unwilling to be confined to what artist Rachel Libeskind calls the “claustrophobic limbo” of Germany’s past.

Can Jewish Artists Transcend Germany’s Past?

(Moment Magazine) —  In the mid-1990s, the Paris-based historian Diana Pinto hoped that the influx of Jews from the former Soviet Union would catalyze a fresh chapter in Jewish Europe. She envisioned a universal, non-Jewish public sphere that would stand for democratic values, in which Jews would interact as citizens in a pluralist context.

Perhaps nowhere has it been more difficult to enact this universalist vision than in Germany, where a commitment to remembering the horrors of antisemitism is cemented not only into the Jewish consciousness, but the national ethos...

Gertrude’s, a new Jew-ish bistro, gains a following in Brooklyn

(New York Jewish Week) — New York City has gained another classic corner Jewish restaurant, this time at the intersection of St. Marks and Carlton Avenues in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Gertrude’s, on a quiet, tree-laden block, opened earlier this summer. It’s the latest offering from restaurateurs Nate Adler, 33, and Rachel Jackson, 34, the couple behind Gertie, the popular Jewish diner in South Williamsburg that opened in 2019.

Historical New York

This Jewish radio reporter was ‘the dean of the press corps’

(New York Jewish Week) — Room 9, the compact space designed for journalists inside New York City Hall, has held its share of personalities over the years. But none has spent as much time there as Stan Brooks, a Jewish radioman who reported on the city for five decades, covering six of its mayors and some of its most pivotal moments. “He was like the dean of the press corps,” longtime colleague and friend Glenn Schuck told the New York Jewish Week about Brooks, who worked at 1010 WINS for almost his entire career...
