Volume 1 Issue 3

Come for the courses and stay for the connections!

This phrase captures what keeps OLLI at DU relevant and interesting. Oh, and it also helps keep both you and me relevant and interesting! We want to be inspired by our courses, but as much as academic learning, it is the serendipitous connections along the way and the sharing of ideas that creates a memorable and lasting impact.

My day usually starts with some exercise and music before plopping down in front of my computer for my newish job at OLLI at DU. Today started with the Beatles, which has me humming as I write. Great melodic tunes, even though I tend to lean toward jazz and soul. With all of the elements trying to capture your attention, thanks for making us part of your day.

Soon we will announce the launch of our new fall catalog so you can be ready to register for courses on August 21. Mark this date on your calendar, so you don't miss out. And, since we know some of you are ready now, please stop by the office to pick up a mini-catalog of all the courses that you may want to take this fall or peruse the mini-catalog on our new website (still under construction) at olli.du.edu. I can assure you that the staff and volunteers at OLLI at DU have not been "resting on our laurels*" as we prepare for the fall term.

To make using our new website, new membership program and new registration easy, we are offering series of meetings at our main sites, where you can learn about how to register for courses and navigate the changes in our membership model. We will also have an online workshop on Friday, August 18 at 10:00. Read below for more info...and thanks for being part of OLLI at DU!

*In Hellenic times, laurel leaves were closely tied to Apollo, the god of music, prophecy and poetry. Apollo was usually depicted with a crown of laurel leaves, and this became a symbol of status and achievement. Victorious athletes at the ancient Pythian Games received wreaths made of laurel branches, and the Romans later adopted the practice by presenting wreaths to generals who won important battles. “Rest on their laurels” came to mean basking in the glory of past achievements. Since the 1800s, however, it has been used for those who are overly satisfied with past triumphs.

Hormones for Healthy Aging: Hype or Holy Grail?

Presented by Gretchen Frey, M.D. and Richard Heppe, M.D.

Hormones are a hot topic in the aging population, and for-profit clinics that provide them are doing a booming business. What exactly are hormones? How much power do they have to affect our health, and what role do they play in the aging process? What are the risks and benefits of hormone therapy for men and women? In addressing these questions, this seminar will focus primarily on the sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone), while touching on the roles of some other important players.

Gretchen Frey, M.D. is a retired OBGYN physician and menopause specialist who completed her medical training and residency at the University of Colorado and practiced in the Denver metro area for over 30 years. She holds an Assistant Clinical Faculty appointment in the CU Department of Family Medicine. Her interests expanded through the years from menopause to healthy aging and the broader role of hormones and hormone therapy. She speaks and writes about topics related to menopause, sexuality, and aging for professional and community audiences.

Richard Heppe, M.D. has been engaged in the private practice of urology since 1991. From 2003- 2005, he served as President of the Rocky Mountain Urologic Society. He is also a member of the American Urological Association, Colorado Medical Society, and Denver Medical Society and is a clinical instructor with several family medicine residency programs. From 2016 through 2022, he was recognized as a Top Doc by 5280 Magazine in the category of reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

China, Taiwan, and the US: A History of Fraught Relations

This program will explain the background of Taiwan’s peculiar status as a de facto country that isn’t recognized as one by most of the world, including the US. It will explore the modern history of China’s relationship with Taiwan, and important turning points in the US’s ties with each. We’ll use this conversation to develop a richer understanding of the tensions we hear about so often today.

Volunteers make it all work! We need you!

OLLI has a long history of being a volunteer-based organization and we so appreciate all who have served in so many different roles over the years. We hope you might be interested in a new wave of opportunities for OLLI at DU members.

OLLI at DU Volunteer Coordinator Sherry Feinbaum is establishing pathways for volunteers to get involved and she needs some help along the way! Let Sherry know if you can help out as she works on creating a database of interested volunteers to ensure that we have the people power to do all the work that lies ahead.
