National History Day National Competition

Of the 61 Massachusetts students who traveled to College Park, MD, to compete in the national contest this past week,10 are coming home with prizes. Among the prize winners are gold-medal winners from Ottoson Middle School in Arlington, MA, for their website “PARC v. Pennsylvania: Pioneering the Right to Education for Children with Cognitive Impairments.” Several special prizes were also awarded, including the Outstanding Project in Discovery or Exploration in History prize, sponsored by the Library of Congress, and the Outstanding Affiliate Awards. Congratulations to all of the Massachusetts students who participated in NHD this year. Learn more about National History Day here.

To mark the celebration of Juneteenth, we invite you to explore our annual NHD web display sharing student research and student projects from the 2022–2023 National History Day in MA competition. Their work explores topics related to African American history and culture.
Spotlighting Illuminated Manuscripts

Learn about some of the oldest items in the Society’s collection: illuminated manuscripts. These documents are often embellished with borders and miniature illustrations. In Season 2, Episode 8 of the MHS podcast The Object of History, Erin Olding, W. Dean Eastman Undergraduate Resident, examines manuscripts from the Middle Ages that are illuminated with gold and silver.

Our galleries and library are open Monday and Wednesday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 7:45 PM (the galleries and library open at 12:00 PM the third Tuesday of the month), and Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
