It is that time of year when I start to feel the so-called dog days of summer*, but like a lot of phrases, this one doesn't mean what most people think! As someone who loves the English language, I find myself wanting to surface the meaning and history behind words and phrases. So, in these intro paragraphs each Friday, you may have to put up with a few asterisks followed by lexical semantic explanations.

Earlier this week we sent out a special announcement about our Cherokee Ranch Castle musical event and it sold out quickly! We added an additional 25 tickets and they sold out in one day! Watch for future member events at the Castle such as An Evening with Sinatra and Wine Tasting!

Read below to learn is what is happening now!

*When Sirius would appear in the sky just before the sun, near the end of July, that marked the beginning of the very hottest days of the year. The Romans referred to this period as "dies caniculares" or "days of the dog star," which was eventually translated as just "dog days and not from dogs' tendency to laze around in the heat.

  • Minimum 30/maximum 38
  • Program Only Prices
  • Double Occupancy: $3,249
  • Single Occupancy: $4,339

Charleston and Savannah — the grand dames of the antebellum South. Journey from one to the other as you learn about Southern culture at plantations, Civil War forts, Lowcountry landmarks and landscaped gardens. Hear tales of centuries past and experience elegant architecture and culinary delights in these waterfront cities where cobblestone streets and historic homes spill over with history and charm.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Walking up to three miles daily on a mix of concrete paths and uneven terrain; stairs at museums, historic houses, restaurants; getting on/off buses and trolley.

Best of all, you’ll…

  • Walk the grounds of an 18th-century Charleston plantation that has survived revolution and civil war, and hear the cannons firing at Savannah’s Old Fort Jackson.
  • Savor the diverse Lowcountry flavors of both cities.
  • Witness the art and learn the history of sweetgrass basket weaving as demonstrated by a local Charlestonian, and learn about the Gullah culture through music.

To Register:

  • By Telephone: please call Road Scholar toll free at (800) 322-5315, Reference program #21715 and note that you are a member at OLLI-Denver.

Get ready to travel!

OLLI at DU will be offering our members six travel experiences during the next year - three domestic (Alaska by Rail; New England, and Charleston/ Savannah) and two international (Cherry Blossoms in Japan; Normandy in France). We are working with facilitators to offer special OLLI at DU courses and webinars which highlight these countries/regions - their cultures, food, history, geology, etc. Stay tuned for this intersection of OLLI courses and what many would consider the ultimate field trip!
