A Summer Time Thing
Members art that truly captures the light, the colors, and the excitement of early Summer.

Painting by Vincent Liu
"In the summer, the days were long, stretching into each other.

Everything was on
pause, yet happening
at the same time
during this collection
of weeks when anything was possible."

―Sarah Dessen

Artists for centuries have lightened our days with renderings of Summer. Classics like, Idle Hours by William Merrit Chase, Picasso's Woman Running on the Beach and Seurat's Bathers capture that warm feeling of sunshine, and the joyful freedom of a summer vacation.

Please enjoy this group of Artspan artists treating us to the welcoming warmth and light of Summer.

Sunday Morning

Holding onto the memory of a special place, in a particular time, is why I paint. Inspiration for my paintings often comes from travel to places near and far that spark my imagination. But I am also inspired to paint unfamiliar settings because I’m dazzled by colors and light or experience passionate feelings from being surrounded by unexpected beauty. So many moments escape our notice because we are caught up in the minutiae of daily life.

Heather at Newport

As an artist, I most enjoy my work when something- be it an expression, a scene, an object of curiosity or beauty- catches my attention and calls me to encapsulate it onto canvas, telling it’s story. I find it to be a continual and satisfying challenge, transforming a vision of my mind’s eye into a painting, in a manner that captures a new beholder with the same beauty that inspired me.

Rhapsody

Having a continuous interaction with the painting along the way is the most important process to me. As it usually takes many turns before it reaches the finishing line. The most challenging and yet rewarding part of the process are those happy accidents, mistakes along the way. Those magical, unrepeatable textures and brush strokes created at each and every turn are the key ingredients of my paintings.

On Vacation

Favorite subjects of mine include people, places and everyday things that I find intriguing for their emotional impact.

My intention is to capture the inherent beauty that these objects possess. I try to enhance the play of light and shadow. I want the viewer to feel the warmth of the sun as it dances across a wave, a pillow, a face. It's all about the light.

Playing By The Jetty

My work captures everyday moments in time.Typically, a figure turned away
from the viewer in a candid pose.

The viewer is invited to complete the story, to fill in the blanks about
time, place, thoughts and emotion.

I believe the intelligence of a painting is in the lost and found edges.
The interest lies within the range of values and textures, the drama of abstraction vs realism and the magic is in the movement created by a confident stroke of the brush or palette knife.

Hammock overlooking Lake Michigan

Painted plein air on a hot sunny morning outside the cottage we rented. The hammock in the shade was a nice spot to enjoy the intense blue of Lake Michigan.
My paintings are a tapestry of colors and forms that together create moods I sense, almost more than see. The movement of the water or breezes blowing around and through me – or the motion of the fish just below me. I feel strongly that these “moods” I sense can only be visualized through the process of plein-air painting, then re-imagined in the studio through intuition.

Mermaid

RJ Clark's work is realistic, often photorealistic, and ranges from finely detailed pencil sketches and watercolors to large format oil paintings on linen and canvas. His work has been exhibited in national shows up and down the east coast.

Snowbirds

Bernice bases her quirky, nostalgic figurative paintings on found photographs and commercial images from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Her paintings incorporate collaged elements such as textured archival paper, fragments of antique lace tablecloths and doilies, and vintage jewelry and rhinestones to recall the bold colors and embellished clothing of mid-century suburban life.

Maria's work has always been inspired by events in her life and her love of nature. Based on her travels and photography, she transforms natural scenes into abstract compositions, focusing on the interplay of light, shadow, and time of day, as seen in the Waterscapes Series. Her Landscapes and Waterscapes series is primarily focused on endangered habitats, such as wetlands, vernal pools and marshes. Her Feminist Series express social and cultural concerns regarding women.

Her Toys and Games Series references, with an unique twist, vintage American board games and toys we grew up with and continue to enjoy.
