Travel safely after springing forward

Travelers should prepare to safely ‘spring forward’ this weekend as daylight saving time begins.

Remember to set your clock ahead an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday. Losing an hour can leave some feeling tired and can result in accidents and injuries. A spike in fatal crashes are recorded after time changes. Don’t travel if you are feeling drowsy and stay alert if you do hit the road.

It will be darker in the morning. Visibility may be impacted during commuting hours. Use headlights, bicycle lights and reflective clothing to see and be seen.

The evening commute will be brighter. Keep a pair of sunglasses with you to avoid sun glare.

Timber Road closed between Strassel and Cochran roads due to landslide activity

Timber Road is closed indefinitely between Strassel and Cochran roads, due to slow-moving landslide activity.

Timber Road connects Highways 26 and 6 and runs through the community of Timber. Travelers must use a different route.

Washington County Land Use & Transportation staff detected the landslide on the edge of the road in January, when cracks appeared in the pavement north of the S curves about halfway between Highways 26 and 6. Warning signs were posted, and staff has been regularly monitoring the site.

Nearby property owners are being informed; no structures are beneath the landslide area.

Movement, including substantial pavement settlement, recently increased, creating the potential for significant damage should the landslide movement continue to intensify.

Temporary road closure measures are in place; a long-term road closure plan is being developed. We will complete a geotechnical evaluation to find a long-term solution to stabilize the road before it re-opens.

Slow-moving landslides can creep gradually and remain relatively stable until they increase in intensity or a large-scale landslide is triggered.
