2023 Goldwater Scholars
Two FAU students were recently named 2023 Goldwater Scholars, marking the second consecutive year that FAU students have received this high honor. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to students who pursue research careers in the fields of natural science, mathematics and engineering.
Goldwater Scholars:
David Baldwin is a sophomore at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, majoring in environmental science with an interest in ecological research.
Michael Green is a junior biology major in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and is dual enrolled at FAU High School. His research interest is entomology. In the fall, he will start at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College for his senior year.

Researcher Awarded Patent
Jang-Yen (John) Wu, Ph.D., recently earned a new patent titled “Treatment for Ischemic Stroke."
Wu is Senior Schmidt Fellow and professor of biomedical science in FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, and member of the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute.

FAU Wave Competition Winners
The FAU Wave recently held their eighth annual FAU Wave Competition, an undergraduate and graduate applied research and entrepreneurial competition organized by FAU's Division of Research. Three FAU students were awarded the Dr. Eric H. Shaw FAU Wave Excellence in Innovation Award and a cash prize of $2,000.

New Pilot Program Funds Alzheimer's Disease Research at FAU
In honor of the breadth of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias research at FAU, multiple colleges, institutes and centers recently collaborated to establish the New Horizons in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Pilot Funding Program.
The goal is to seed new transformative advancements in interdisciplinary research into the origins, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, said Randy Blakely, Ph.D., executive director, FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. FAU's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, College of Engineering and Computer Science, Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention, Brain Institute, and David and Lynn Nicholson Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research are joining forces for this initiative.

M3F-FAU Partnership Highlighted in Palm Beach Society
The Mind Music Movement Foundation (M3F) for Neurological Disorders is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports comprehensive integrative programming that addresses movement, mobility, balance, speech, nutrition and mental well-being. Recently M3F announced an exciting partnership with Florida Atlantic University’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute and Schmidt College of Medicine.

Partnering with School Districts
Researchers at FAU, including principal investigator Elizabeth Villares, Ph.D., professor in the College of Education, recently earned a five-year, $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to partner with five school districts in Florida for a project titled, the “Wellness Advocates Valuing Educators and Students” (WAVES) program.

Brain Blitz 2023
More than 600 guests attended the annual Brain Blitz, held during Brainy Days in March, at the Cox Science Center.
This year, 30 scientists from FAU, Max Planck Florida Institute of Neuroscience and The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology, as well as several students from FAU High, volunteered for the family-oriented event, which featuring 20 hands-on neuroscience activities for students of all ages, said Nicole Baganz, Ph.D., director of community engagement and programming, FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, and research assistant professor, biomedical science, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.

21st Annual Symposium
Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College recently celebrated the 21st annual Scholarly and Creative Research Symposium on the John D. MacArthur Campus.
The keynote speaker was Trudier Harris, Ph.D., University Distinguished Research Professor Emerita, English, University of Alabama, J. Carlyle Sitterson Distinguised Professor of English Emerita, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Celebrating Biomedical Research Awareness Day
More than 70 people attended the annual Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) celebration at the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute on the Jupiter campus.
This year's keynote speaker was Lawrence Toll, Ph.D., professor of biomedical science, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, and member of the FAU Brain Institute, who presented “The Opioid Epidemic and What We Can Do About It.”

Morton Research Forum
The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College recently hosted their annual Morton Research Forum, including student and scholars research presentations.
The forum serves as a foreign policy think tank by providing support for diplomacy and interdisciplinary fellowships awarded to Honors College undergraduates.
This year, five Honors College students conducted research as Morton Student Fellows and eight as Morton Student Scholars.
