Advisor Spotlight: Charity Turner

Charity Turner is an advisor who loves a challenge. An advisor at CCCC since 2014, she views her advising cases as puzzles that need solving, and she relies on her own experience as a transfer student to identify and sympathize with her students. She enjoys the overlap of teaching and advising to get a fuller picture of her students' lives and challenges, and her investment in advising encourages a personal connection with her advisees.

Charity has three pieces of advice for new advisors - Take your time (advising meetings need prep time and a plan for the meeting to go off course), Encourage meetings (provide clear instructions for scheduling and keeping appointments), and Keep a record (maintaining notes and records for your advising meetings helps to avoid duplicating work and keeps the students informed). For Charity, the most rewarding aspect of advising is supporting students as people, not just students - and her students are lucky to have her! Thank you, Charity, for all you do!

NEW! Advising Group Chat
Beginning February 13, all advisors will be added to the NEW "Advising Questions" Group Space in Gmail - a place to ask questions, offer answers, post resources and provide support for colleagues. Folks are encouraged to post your advising questions to the chat, and anyone can answer with helpful suggestions. We'll have a few ground rules for the chat space:

  1. Stay on topic - ask questions, answer questions or post suggestions related to Advising at CCCC.
  2. Keep the chat positive.
  3. Be honest about your knowledge of a topic.
  4. Be kind with your colleagues - everyone has a different level of knowledge about advising.
  5. Don’t only talk to one person. If the conversation becomes too in-depth or specific, take it to a separate chat.
  6. You can leave and rejoin at any time.

I'm hopeful this will provide advisors with real-time answers to their advising questions, and also allow us to build our community knowledge base of advising best practices.

  • Print student schedules from Self-Service (instead of Datatel/Colleague) so they are clear and easy to read. Use the print function from either the List or Calendar view in the Course Plan tab.

  • Enter a note every time you meet/chat/email with a student - notes allow other advisors to understand the student's advising history.

  • You can view all sections offered in a discipline by searching for that discipline in the Course Catalog and filtering to the current semester.

  • Proper placement in Math and English courses is a snap using the Test Scores tab and RISE Placement Guide. View the tutorial here!

  • Are you not receiving email notifications that an advisee has requested a review or left a note? Check your preferred email in your User Profile in Self-Service. You may need to add your work email and mark it as preferred.
Transcript Information for Advisors
  • Transcripts are not evaluated until all are received. You can see what transcripts have been received and which ones we are still waiting for on either the ST-CRI or ST-IASU screen in Colleague.

  • If a student lists a school/college on their application, we MUST have their transcript or a Transcript Waiver Form must be completed.

  • The normal transcript evaluation period once all transcripts have been received is 7-10 business days or longer during peak times. Currently, the processing time is taking longer due to staffing shortages in the Student Records & Registrar's office.

  • If you have an urgent need for a transcript evaluation, please email Haley Thomas. If you have a student(s) with upcoming appointments that you would like to request their transcripts be evaluated ahead of their appointment, please send the student names/IDs and meeting dates to Haley.
