Early Intervention Programs Fail to Help Psychosis Patients Rebuild Careers


A new article published in the Community Mental Health Journal finds service users who had experienced psychosis and received early intervention in psychosis services (EIS) had significant problems finding and maintaining employment during their recovery. This research, headed by Nev Jones, assistant professor in the School of Social Work at Pitt, reports the most common vocational outcomes for service users were unemployment and low-wage, short-term employment. Additionally, the current work reports that EIS emphasized quick placement in low-wage jobs over career development.

Support and expand Social Work in Libraries Program


The Social Work in Libraries Program, a collaboration among the Allegheny County Library Association, the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, began bringing professionals into libraries this September. The Downtown, East Liberty, Allegheny, Oakland and Hill District CLP branches now each have their own in-house social worker. Read full Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial here.

PhD alum has Yale University Visiting Faculty Appointment


Doctoral alumnus Daniel Jacobson López, PhD, MSW, LCSW was selected as Visting Faculty at Yale School of Public Health, Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS, with three other scholars nationwide. The REIDS Program is for historically underrepresented faculty whose research focuses on HIV/AIDS among marginalized populations. In this role, he will continue his research on gay Black and/or Latino male sexual assault survivors who acquire HIV through sexual violence. 

A new Frederick Honors program brings national experts, including MSW alumna, to Pitt


In August 2023, Nicola Foote, dean of Pitt’s David C. Frederick Honors College, announced the launch of the Experts-in-Residence Program, a partnership between the college and three distinguished leaders in their fields. Throughout the 2023-24 academic year, MSW alumna Morgan Overton will be artist-in-residence; offering specialized workshops and events for the University of Pittsburgh and other communities throughout Pittsburgh. 2024 Diversity Forum: Call for Proposals 


The 2024 Diversity Forum will be held Jan. 23 and 24. The theme is “Amplifying Our Voices Through Active Listening and Constructive Dialogue.” Our theme builds on 2023-24 being designated “The Year of Discourse and Dialogue” at the University of Pittsburgh.The deadline to submit workshop proposals is Nov. 10, 2023.
