The magnificent Cy; People batted against him, but I never knew why.”

Cy Young and the Boston Red Sox
|
With Opening Day of Major League Baseball coming up on Thursday, 30 March, we thought we would share this photograph of Cy Young and other baseball players at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston. (ca. 1908–1911)
Denton True “Cy” Young was born in Gilmore, Ohio, in 1867. He played professional baseball from 1890 until his retirement in 1911, and for the Boston Americans (later the Red Sox) from 1901 until 1909. Known for his powerful fastball, his teammates nicknamed him “Cy,” short for “Cyclone.” Young’s 7,356 innings pitched, 815 career starts, and 749 complete games continue to stand as major league records.
