The Joy of Sharing

While community is such a vital element of our culture at OLLI at DU, it is so rewarding when we share it beyond our classes and member events. We’ve done just that at senior expos and fairs around the Denver metro area over the past month or so. The vitality and curiosity exhibited at each was contagious and is contributing to a growing OLLI membership that is vital to our success.

We’ve been at the Living in Balance and Aging Well Expo in Broomfield, the Successful Aging Expo in Littleton, the Douglas County Seniors Vintage and Vibrant Expo in Parker, the Foothills Active Adult Open House in Littleton and the Highlands Ranch Adult Health Fair (plus a Lockheed retirement dinner in Littleton).

Kudos to OLLI volunteers Janet Kester, Gary Burandt, Patty Smilanic, Bob Steele, and Becky Stout who participated along with various members of the staff. We really have enjoyed meeting other active seniors and promoting our favorite lifelong learning program.

Your Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a financially self-supporting program. OLLI at DU has three main funding sources which keep our program sustainable and allows us to provide the highest quality lifelong learning and social opportunities for our 2000+ members:

  • Revenue from memberships and course registrations
  • Annual allotment from the Osher Foundation Endowment (a fixed amount each year)
  • Financial support from our members

Membership/registration fees and endowment allotment are our largest sources of revenue, but they still don't cover all of our program needs (as an example, upgrading of our AV equipment, microphones, and technology). We rely on the generosity of our members to keep the program thriving and affordable. Making a financial gift is one way to appreciate the impact OLLI at DU has had on your life in retirement. Your gift will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the enriching educational and social programming that touches the lives of so many seniors throughout the wider Denver Metro area.

Please join the 150+ members who have donated in support of our program. You can help ensure the continued success of OLLI at DU through your financial gift, will, trust, or retirement plan.

Here are some ways you can contribute:

One-Time Donation: You can make a one-time donation in any amount you are comfortable with. Every dollar counts and brings us closer to our goals.

  • Via Mail: Send a check made out to OLLI at DU to our office at 2211 S. Josephine Street, Denver, CO 80208

Distribution from your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). What a wonderful gift to the current and future OLLI at DU membership: A gift from your RMD is a smart way to invest in OLLI as there are important tax savings for you!

Leaving a Legacy for OLLI at DU in your estate planning. You can achieve tax benefits by naming OLLI at DU as a beneficiary of your will or retirement accounts. You always have the option to modify the terms of the gift if your circumstances change.

Bizarre Fruit from a "Poisonous Tree”

November 10th from 10-11:30 am with Dennis Wanabo

In February of 1981, investigators in Florida obtained an illegal confession, despite a clear request for counsel, from a central character in the interstate-contract murder of a young Colorado mother two weeks previously … a crime of towering brutality … a crime of meticulous planning.

In the short run, the tearful confession would break the larger case wide open. In the long run, it would receive a no-nonsense slap down from the Colorado Supreme Court and would be stricken from use at trial.

But it would have profound radiating effects—sometimes for good; sometimes for ill. It would alter the futures of all co-conspirators. It would throw an ongoing trial into a tailspin. It would affect the professional futures of two Colorado attorneys, and one high-ranking Colorado investigator.

Dennis Wanebo was a trial attorney from 1978 until his retirement in 2012. During that time, he tried thousands of contested hearings and court trials, along with hundreds of jury trials. At the time of the murder case here, Dennis was a Chief Deputy District Attorney in Colorado’s 20th Judicial District (Boulder County). Ultimately, he would leave prosecution and would work “the other side of the courtroom,” again trying cases that ranged from traffic to murder. In addition, he handled a large civil trial practice. In this case, Dennis co-prosecuted the lengthy trial against the Florida “money man.”
