TODAY at 4pm! Changemakers in Conversation with Dr. Gina Ann Garcia


Join us for a transformative Changemakers in Conversation program featuring Dr. Gina Ann Garcia, author of Transforming Hispanic-Serving institutions for Equity & Justice. Dr. Garcia is an award-winning author, public intellectual, and host of the podcast ¿Qué pasa, HSIs? L

The program kicks off with a reception catered by the Colombian Spot. Afterwards, Dr. Garcia will be in conversation with Eboni Zamani-Gallaher, Professor & Associate Dean for Equity, Justice, and Strategic Partnerships in the School of Education, Michele Reid-Vazquez, Director of the Center for Ethnic Studies Research, and Sheila Velez-Martinez, Co-Director, Center for Civil Rights and Racial Justice. They will discuss Dr. Garcia's pivotal work and its guidance for institutions serving Hispanix/Latinx students and communities.

Moon and Lee present at summit


Assistant Professor Deborah Moon and doctoral student Jenn Lee recently presented at the 20th HAWAI`I INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT, a highly regarded forum for professionals from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives to exchange knowledge and insights related to preventing and addressing violence, abuse, and trauma. This year's summit was attended by approximately 1500 participants, and Dr. Moon and Jenn made a notable contribution with their presentation titled "Engagement measures in Maltreatment prevention studies: A scoping review." Doctoral students C. Bailey Nichols and Amanda Cruce also participated in the project as co-authors.

Alumna leads team and community


BASW alumna Yvette Harrison, a lifelong resident of Wilkinsburg and the team manager for the Wilkinsburg Alive and Kicking Kickball Team, stands for a portrait after practice on April 26, at Whitney Park in Wilkinsburg. Harrison started coming to games in 2017 after learning about the Steel City Kickers league through a colleague at Allegheny County Children Youth and Family Services. Read more.

MSW alumna is a 'compulsive volunteer'


MSW alumna Judy McAtee is profiled in the Midland Daily News. She shares: “I think volunteering is essential. I don’t think a community can function effectively without everybody doing a little bit to help out. It was very important to have our kids witness our volunteering. They see that you have to give back. There are so many opportunities. You can do it as little or as often as you want." Read more.

Colleen Young’s lifetime of service brought her to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank


MSW alumna Colleen Young starts each workday trying to help Pennsylvania politicians and policymakers find the mislaid political will that she believes can reduce — if not completely end — hunger for the estimated 1,136,400 state residents living without proper daily nutrition. 


Since May 2022, she’s served as director of government affairs for Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, a nonprofit agency that opened in 1980 as a small Hill District food pantry. Read more.
