Faculty win awards

Dr. Nev Jones has won the 2022 Judi Chamberlin Joy in Advocacy Award. Presented by the National Coalition on Mental Health Recovery (NCMHR), this national award "recognizes an individual who has made enormous achievements in bringing hope into the lives of persons with lived experience and advancing the field of disability rights advocacy."

Dr. James Huguley has won the Dr. Larry E. Davis Excellence in Community Engaged Scholarship award given at the Dr. Larry Davis Black Excellence in the Academy Awards and Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Center on Race and Social Problems event on November 3rd. The award honors his "demonstrated commitment to execute rigorous applied research designed to improve the success and well-being of young people in the greater Pittsburgh community." 

Doctoral student wins award


Doctoral student Soobin Kim will receive the Outstanding Dissertation Proposal Award from the Korean American Social Work Educators Association. Her dissertation title is The diverging trajectories of child externalizing behavior by family economic status at birth: The mediating role of neighborhood.


Kim will receive the award at the 2022 CSWE APM Friday, November 11, 2022 at 5pm in room Catalina 2.

BASW student wins award


BASW student Christina Gremba was presented with the 2022 Empowerment Award from Pennsylvania Women Work, a nonprofit workforce development organization dedicated to helping individuals find financial stability. Read more and watch the video about Christina's life here.

Child Welfare faculty presenting at conference

Dr. Brooke Rawls, Academic Coordinator for the CWEB program, and Shayla Jones, University of Pittsburgh Child Welfare Resource Center,  are co-presenting at the Forum on Pennsylvania’s Children- A Convening of Leaders, on Thursday, November 10th, 2022. Their topic is “Using Trauma-Informed Care to Support Teen Parents Before, During and After their Pregnancy Journey”. Additionally, Dr. Liz Winter is also providing the keynote titled “ Post-Traumatic Growth: Promise, Pathways and Pitfalls”.

Experts explore the rise in ‘302’ involuntary psychiatric commitment petitions


Faculty members Dr. Nev Jones and Dr. Leah Jacobs spoke to Public Source about the increase in involuntary psychiatric commitment petitions. From 2015 through 2021, Allegheny County recorded a 21% increase in the number of petitions filed to initiate evaluations for involuntary commitment. ICYMI: 2022 Year in Review


2021-2022 was an exciting year at the Pitt School of Social Work! The Child Welfare Education and Leadership Program celebrated 25 years, the Center on Race and Social Problems celebrated 20 years, the inaugural Florence Gibbs Momeyer lecture featured national disability rights activist Haben Girma, faculty traveled to Africa to build connections for students and faculty, and the school's anti-racism work continued with the doctoral students expanding and continuing the work at CSWE APM.
