SPOTLIGHT: ARE YOU UP TO THE CHALLENGE?

Calling all businesses. Team building is an important element of a healthy organization. At the Volunteer Center, we have been rallying business since 2010 to participate with our Volunteer Challenge.

Since the inception, we have mobilized 83 businesses to complete 217 sustainable projects for 116 unique nonprofit organizations. We make it easy by soliciting projects from local nonprofits and helping to match your business and team with a project that will make a huge difference for a nonprofit and the community they serve. To see our 2021 video, click here.

Join Jane George, PPL Electric Utilities, our 2022 Volunteer Challenge Honorary Chair as we come together on May 11th at ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks to celebrate the amazing work that is being done.

FEATURED PROGRAM

Project Blueprint

Project Blueprint.png

Project Blueprint- a blueprint for increasing diversity in volunteer leadership.

Board leadership is at the center of nonprofit organizations. At the Volunteer Center we provide intentional leadership training with the goal of increasing diversity aimed to develop boards that are equitable and inclusive, responsive, and reflective of the culturally diverse communities served.

Our 8-week program provides tangible training on all aspects of board leadership. Our program also introduces the participants to our local nonprofits with the goal of networking and connecting for service with those organizations.

A recent report issued by BoardSource, "2021 Leading with Intent” shares that the board composition continues to be predominantly White/Caucasian/European with 87% of CEO’s, 83% of Board Chairs and 78% of board members (from 820 responders). There continues to be significant work to be done to change the table.

Registration for the program is required. Click here to register.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Youth Council Logo -Final _1_.png

Our Youth Council has participated in a number of impactful projects already in 2022. They created a MLK Day social media challenge that brought significant awareness to the day of service in January. They took part in various activities related to Black History Month and were able to advocate for the cause throughout February. Now this month, they are volunteering at the Lehigh Valley Auto Show.

This summer, our leadership intensive program, YLEAD, will run July 11th-15th and July 25th-29th. The success of last year's program led us to the easy decision of having the intern-run camp offered two separate weeks instead of one, so that a greater number of students can experience the fun, engaging, and empowering atmosphere that YLEAD provides.

We are excited to welcome our newest staff member,

Sierra Mamay, to the Volunteer Center as our Youth Program Coordinator. Sierra was hired in October of 2021, after she interned with us over the summer developing and running our YLEAD program. She is finishing up her degree in Corporate Communication at Penn State Lehigh Valley while continuing to work with our youth, as well as support the Volunteer Center with marketing and social media.

A message from our CEO, Karen Smith

Spring is around the corner and that means we are full-steam ahead on our program lineup. Sometimes we need to stop, pause and reflect on the work we are doing and how many lives we impact each and every day.

We remind ourselves that it is not about the busyness - it is about the outcomes. Our work touches so many individuals, businesses, and nonprofits and if we do not pause, our efforts would be without purpose.

Today, I encourage you to stop, pause and reflect.
