Risk Management Update April 2024 

National Student Employment Week National Student Employment Week was held April 7-13 to recognize the important role student employees play in higher education. Thank you to student office assistant Sofia Pepping and international risk student program assistant Michael Craighton - we appreciate you and thank you for the valuable work you do! 

Staff updates Shaun M. Jamieson, international risk manager, recently co-presented a University Risk Managers and Insurance Association (URMIA) webinar on "Demystifying the Compliance Risks of Activities Abroad." URMIA is an international association of risk management professionals with about 3,000 members. Shaun also presented a session on the topic at the Higher Education Risk Management Conference in Galveston, TX. Susie Johnson, risk management director, and Shaun M. Jamieson, international risk manager, recently attended the Higher Education Risk Management Conference, hosted by the University of Texas in Galveston, TX. The conference focused on risk management, information security, and systemwide compliance topics. Shaun M. Jamieson has co-authored a chapter for the book, "Convergence of Litigation, Policy, and Standards: Building the Informed Practitioner in Education Abroad Risk Management," to be published in July. The chapter, co-written with Patrick Morgan from the University of Michigan, discusses international travel policies.

ATV/UTV damage coverage available  Effective July 1, university-owned all-terrain vehicles (ATV) or utility terrain vehicles (UTV) qualify for optional physical damage coverage under the Regents Motor Vehicle Self-Insurance Program (MVLP). Third-party liability claims for damages caused by the use of a university ATV/UTV will continue to be handled through the Iowa Tort Claims Act.   Coverage details Covered perils include collision, vandalism, theft, fire, flood, wind, hail. The FY25 rate (7/1/24 – 6/30/25) is $27 per month per ATV/UTV, payable to transportation services. There is a $500 deductible per loss per ATV/UTV. Coverage is written on an actual cash basis, taking into consideration age, condition, and depreciation of the ATV/UTV. Physical damage claims are processed through risk management. Golf carts are excluded.

Crisis response exercise Representatives from units across campus recently participated in an international crisis response exercise led by Iowa State's global assistance and insurance provider On Call International. Attendees developed response plans for two scenarios representing critical incidents that might impact university travelers abroad. Shaun M. Jamieson and Michael Craighton from risk management coordinated the event.
