The Eisenhowers in Colorado: Their History and Legacy with Glenn Gravlee

Monday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 am on April 1, 8, 15, and 22.

Location: The Eisenhower Chapel in Lowry (293 Roslyn St., Denver)

Glenn Gravlee is a Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology at University of Colorado School of Medicine. As a retired subspecialist in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, he has interest and expertise in the cardiac aspects of Ike’s medical history. He and his wife, Joyce, live in Denver and also share a cabin near the Byers Peak Ranch in Grand County, where Ike enjoyed his summer fly-fishing breaks. Glenn has co-facilitated approximately 20 courses for OLLI at DU on a range of topics including popular music history (1950s and 1960s), military history, movies, and the Berlin Wall.

This course will trace Ike and Mamie’s extensive Colorado connections through four weeks of 2-hour sessions at the Eisenhower Chapel at Lowry.

Although neither Dwight David (Ike) nor Mamie Doud Eisenhower was born in Colorado, Mamie was raised mostly in Denver. They wed in Denver in 1916 and visited Colorado frequently over the four ensuing decades. Ike was stationed at Denver’s Ft. Logan in the 1920s, and Mamie visited her Denver family several times without Ike as he pursued his widespread military assignments. Sadly, some of her visits were for funerals of siblings or parents.

Denver served as headquarters for Ike’s 1952 Presidential primary campaign, and subsequently he established his “Summer White House” at Lowry Air Force Base.   During these visits, Ike and his entourage escaped to the nearby mountains in Fraser for extended fly-fishing getaways. While playing golf at Cherry Hills Country Club in 1955, he experienced a life-threatening heart attack, from which he convalesced for seven weeks at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. This prompted controversy about his fitness to serve a second term.

Ike and Mamie left profound legacies in Colorado, among which are the Eisenhower Chapel at Lowry and the Eisenhower Suite in the Fitzsimons Building on the Anschutz Medical Campus, as well as multiple namesake memorials including parks, schools, libraries, and a very busy tunnel.

Mark this on your calendar. Registration to open soon!
