The City of Greater Sudbury - News and Updates, May 2024

A Message From the Mayor

As Mayor, I am committed to celebrating our community’s pride of place while fostering favourable conditions for local economic development and population growth.

I have always stated my firm belief that Council must demonstrate that we are willing to invest in ourselves and our community’s future – and that we do so in a fiscally prudent and strategic manner.  Council did just that last month when we unanimously voted to build a new event centre in the City’s downtown South District.

The structural assessment presented to Council clearly demonstrated the deficiencies of the existing 73-year-old arena. A new event centre achieves numerous strategic goals over its 60 to 70-year lifespan and provides widespread economic benefits, including new jobs, enhanced tourism attraction opportunities, and private-sector investment in complementary residential, hospitality and commercial opportunities.

Our decision to develop a new event centre in the downtown core does not mean we will stop investing in the other communities across Greater Sudbury. We know we have social needs and other infrastructure demands that need to be addressed, and we will continue to work hard as a Council to bring projects of interest forward and foster prosperity across our entire city.

Stay Safe and Bear Aware

Tips for a Wildlife-Friendly Spring

Spring has arrived early this year, and so have the bears. The potential for human-bear interactions increases in the spring when there are fewer natural food sources available to them. This is when food sources, such as garbage and bird feed, can draw bears into populated areas.

Thanks to the hard work of our community volunteers, there are many community gardens located throughout the city. Some are free to join and some require a fee for your own garden box.  Some community gardens request that owners maintain and harvest their own plots while others offer their free produce to anyone who stops by!
