We're celebrating women in business
March was Women's History month and we have continued in early April to celebrate chamber-member businesses that are owned or managed by women. More than 20 women movers and shakers gave us their perspective by answering three questions.

On March 11, we featured Elaine Warner of Collins & Associates Insurance, Margaret Tvedten of Tvedten Fine Art, Kathie Breighner of Concierge Publications, and Shelby Ferguson of The Day's Design. Here are their profiles.

On March 18, we featured Karen Rolfes of Oil Paintings by Karen Rolfes, Michelle Kruzel of Northern Michigan Architecture, Melissa Hoglund of First Tee Northern Michigan, and Cindy McSurely of Blissfest Music Organization. Here are their profiles.

On March 25, we featured Sara Smith CPA, Carrie Blanck of Tres Belle Interior Design, Nikki Law of Polished on Main, Jody Ewbank of Stafford's Pier, and Amy Gillard of Harbor Springs Festival of the Book. Here are their profiles.

On April 1, we featured Amelie Dawson of the Harbor Springs Library, Julie Wieman of Macgregor Plumbing, Danielle Blasko of the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, Laura Swem of Last Chance Resale, and Elizabeth Kirby of Elizabeth Blair Fine Pearls. Here are their profiles.

Here are profiles of five more women business leaders:
Hanni Yothers,
HANNI Gallery
I own the business with my husband, John - we started the store in 2009. I currently run the business, with his input.

A highlight of managing your business:
Doing what I love makes most days great. One of my favorite things is how many people who walk through the door comment on how wonderful the store is - the artwork and hand-crafts we carry, the displays, the overall look, and the staff/customer service. That's what I live for!

What inspires you?
Supporting independent artists who make quality, beautiful work. I love to see all the amazing things that artists make with their talented hands - it's like Christmas every time an artist stops by to drop off work! Seeing all of the talent in the world inspires me to hone my own craft (metalsmithing), as well as search for the best pieces to carry in the gallery.
What advice do you have for young women in business today?
Just go for it, and do something that you love! There are always parts of any job, even that of an entrepreneur, that are cumbersome. But if most of your day is spent doing something you enjoy, it's all worth it. And approach hard situations with curiosity, not judgement - there are going to be difficult times in any business, and with the right outlook, you can get through anything.
Jane Millar,
Northern Community Mediation
I have been the Executive Director of Northern Community Mediation since July 2003, almost 18 years.

What is a highlight of managing your organization?
 The many aspects of Northern Community Mediation's growth is an inspiration to me: 1) From a caseload of 10 cases per year in 1993 to 800 cases per year; 2) from 10 volunteer mediators to over 50 mediators;
3) from a budget of $22,000 to over $200,000; 4) from a one-room office to a facility that has separate offices for each of the employees, three mediation rooms, and work, break and storage rooms; 5) from a little known non-profit to one that is highly respected within Charlevoix and Emmet counties as well around the state; 6) from handling primarily small claims types of cases to mediating all types of cases; 7) from cases valued at less than $6,000 to those worth millions of dollars. The bottom line is that Northern Community Mediation has grown into a highly professional organization that is respected and needed within the community.

What inspires you?
The most rewarding aspect of mediation is when disputants who are at extreme odds with one another and bitter towards one another are able to work out their differences and arrive at an agreement that is positive for both of them. I am also inspired by the dedication of the volunteer mediators who persevere through what are often tumultuous mediations. Having a supportive board of directors is another inspiration for me. And, the staff is a huge inspiration. They work above and beyond the call of duty.

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
My father used to ask me, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?" My response was always the same. "Happy." Who wants to go through life being unhappy? So, each of us has to find those things that help us in our quest for happiness. This includes many aspects within our lives, one of which is our job. When we are happy in our employment, it is no longer a "I have to do this" feeling but rather one of satisfaction and pleasure. We look forward to going to work knowing that there is so much that we can accomplish. And, at the end of the day, we feel good about ourselves. So, my advice is to find your happy spot.
Melissa Adelaine-Supernault,
Adelaine Construction, Inc.
I started working for my father doing general labor/bottom-rung kind of work in 1999. I earned my builder’s license and transitioned to Project Coordinator/Partner in 2006.

What is a highlight of managing your business?
There are many highlights, but the two biggest would be working with family and positively influencing our clients’ lives. Being partners with my father and brother has given us irreplaceable family time together. We are an energetic and dynamic team, so it’s not always easy, but it is very rewarding.
Having clients invite our team for a project completion party or stop in to visit years after a project just to say 'hi' is always a highlight. I'm honored and humbled every time a client says how much their family enjoys our hard work.
What inspires you?
Bad design inspires me! I get excited when a client explains their project needs and how their current home doesn’t meet any of them. Being a problem solver, finding solutions through thoughtful design is actually fun to me. I can look at a project and immediately see the potential, which makes our remodeling projects particularly gratifying when we turn a non-functioning space into the family’s new favorite place.

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
Today’s failure is a lesson in tomorrow’s success. Not everyone was excited to see a young girl on a male-dominated jobsite 22 years ago, but I worked hard doing every dirty job, eventually earning the respect required to now lead the company. Although my crew jokes that chipmunks now nest in my tool belt because I’m primarily in the office, they also know there is nothing I will ask of them that I haven’t already done.
Don’t strive to be the best female business owner, strive to be the best business owner.
Bridgette Frye,
Frye Massage
I am the owner of Frye Massage. I began my private practice in January 2010. I was able to fine tune my skills and develop experience in massage by working with local businesses in various settings. It has been a very fulfilling journey so far.

What is a highlight of managing your business?
There are many highpoints throughout my career from the excitement of opening my first office in downtown Petoskey to realizing my dream of having a space in Harbor Springs large enough to share with other like-minded holistic practitioners. The most valuable moment for me happens repeatedly each and every day.
It is an absolute honor to be able to assist patients in obtaining a more excellent state of health and wellness . I am humbled to be chosen as their therapist in assisting those who are suffering from pain , recuperating from injuries or encountering stress and tension. The therapy I offer speeds up the healing process and even revives emotional equilibrium. I know when they leave their appointment with me they feel better than before. As I have developed my business long term relationships have been cultivated, my work continually improves and enhances others lives. This is my dream career ; In service to others with purpose and positive lasting affect.

What inspires you?
My patients and fellow health professionals inspire me. They help me to realize the importance of my work and view health and wellness as an integral component of living. My parents were small business owners. I grew up watching how hard they worked but they always found great joy in what they did. My dad encouraged me throughout life to "figure out what makes you happy and you will never work a day in your life. If someone else can do it , so can you!"

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
My advice would be the same as what my dad shared with me. "If someone else can do it , so can you!" Figure out what brings you joy and find the career that will help facilitate that each and every day. Everything else will fall into place after you do the footwork. Understand that the accurate measurement for success exists beyond a profit and loss statement.
Nancy Breighner,
Hilda of Harbor
I am the owner and buyer and have been on State and Main for 35 years. The building on this corner was empty and I had a vision for what I thought would work both in this location and in Harbor Springs. Hilda's celebrates 35 years this year.

What is a highlight of managing your business?
The friendships I have made with customers continue to be a highlight of my 35 years in business. Our dedicated customers appreciate the efforts made by my staff and myself to continue to enjoy a wonderful shopping experience every time they shop with us.
Over the years, we have grown from just Icelandic woolen garments to an international shopping experience with items from England, Italy, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, France, Canada and Serbia. One of the reasons I have maintained the shop over the years is the combination of great customers and friendships along with the excitement of finding new products each season.

What inspires you?
It makes me happy when someone finds something in Hilda's that they wear and then come back and tell us about the compliments that they received. We want customers to feel and look good in our products. Hilda's strives to find something different and to create a fun shopping experience for our customers. People who shop with us want something original that they can't find elsewhere and to be able to wear it today and 10 years from now. Harbor Springs brings people from around the world looking for something different, and we hope that they find that at Hilda's.

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
If you have an idea and want to pursue that idea, it takes effort to create a successful business, and those efforts begin from day one. A good partner and sounding board like I had in my husband makes a huge difference, as their contributions can be so valuable. Do your research and then enjoy the ride!

16 or older? Now it’s your turn for the vaccine
If you’re wondering if you’re eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, and you’re 16 and older, the answer is YES! And the Health Department of Northwest Michigan is urging you to register now for a vaccination clinic near you.
“We have now entered a new phase where if you’re 16 and older and wondering if it’s your turn to register, the answer is a resounding yes!” said Lisa Peacock, Health Officer. “We have almost immediate openings in many of our clinics and are asking anyone 16 and older who’s interested in getting their COVID-19 vaccination to visit our website and register. In many cases, you can get an appointment within a day or two, or in other cases it may be 7-10 days out,” Peacock said. “We look forward to seeing you at one of our clinics very soon!”

The health department hosts COVID-19 vaccination clinics weekly in all four counties in its jurisdiction of Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego counties. To see where a clinic is being held near your home or worksite and to pre-register, visit www.nwhealth.org.

Chamber searching for new office space
The Harbor Springs Chamber has started to search for new office space, and we’re open to suggestions and ideas from our members and the community.

By the end of this year, the chamber will have to move from its current office, which it has shared with the Andrew Blackbird Museum at 368 Main Street, for the past 20 years or so.
The chamber will need an office with space for two staff members, a copy machine, file cabinets and displays of local information and materials. The chamber is open to options that would include sharing office space. If we find a space that is somewhat larger than we need, we are open to partnering with another small office or business that also needs space. Ideally, we would like to be in or close to the downtown, but we are flexible on that option as well.

Anyone with space available between now and the end of the year is invited to contact Bonnie Kulp, Chamber Executive Director, at 231-526-7999 or director@harborspringschamber.com

Efficiency United helps school district reduce energy costs by $13,000 annually
When the Harbor Springs school district held a facility audit in 2019, lighting improvements were identified as needed, but were not prioritized due to the high cost. Then Efficiency United stepped in.

Efficiency United offers rebates to City of Harbor Springs Electric customers for energy projects. The program’s goal is to reduce the amount of energy waste while maintaining and often improving the comfort, safety and sustainability of energy using products.

In 2020, Energy Advisor John Payne reached out to the schools about available rebates offered through the City of Harbor Springs Electric’s energy-efficiency program. He worked with the school’s facility team to identify opportunities across the district to improve lighting, while managing the total investment the school had to make.

“The process was very user-friendly and will end up saving the district in energy costs, while making incredible enhancements to the school’s lighting,”
said School Superintendent Michael Behrmann. “To us, it was an incredible win-win as far as safety, sustainability and lowering our operating costs.”

The school used sinking funds in addition to more than $18,000 in rebates from Efficiency United to fund the projects. Upgrades were made to parking lots, perimeter, and gymnasium lighting. The projects will save the school over $13,000 in energy costs annually. The kWh usage by the schools will be reduced by over 125,000 annually, equivalent to a passenger car driving over 220,000 miles or over 9,977 gallons of gasoline.

Efficiency United offers rebates on energy-efficient electric equipment for all City of Harbor Springs Electric customers. For more information, contact John Payne at jpayne@clearesult.com or 810-241-1107.

Fun facts at the end of ski season from Nub’s Nob

Here are a few fun facts for the 2020-21 ski season at Nub's Nob:

The ski season started late on December 12 and lasted a total of 109 days.

It was a below normal snow year with 90" of natural snow. The last time it snowed more than one inch was February 25. However, we received a massive dumping of snow from February 5th thru the 10th when 40" of snow landed at Nub's.

It was a mild and sunny winter. We had 0 days with single digits as a high temperature and the average Saturday temperature during the ski season was 33 degrees.
Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau lists 6 fun things to do in the spring

In like a lion, out like a lamb. March is done and though the lion tried to rear its head a bit in the final days of the month, it’s over. Our awesome resorts kept skiers and boarders happy right up through April 4, but now snow guns are silent and we’ve shed the winter coats and boots in favor of fleece and tennis shoes.

So now what? I hope you’re anxious to safely travel and come to the Petoskey Area. If so, Diane Dakins gives you her list
of six fun things to do in April. They include visiting the Lyric Theatre in Harbor Springs, Crooked Tree Arts Center, a zipline adventure, a nature preserve, bicycling, and Petoskey stone hunting. Here are the details.
