Pgh Hospital Workers Survey results press conference today!
At a virtual press conference on Monday, April 25 at 11:00 AM, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work will announce the results of the largest survey of Pittsburgh hospital workers ever conducted. Researchers conducted the survey to help provide the Mayor and the public with a better understanding of the myriad challenges driving hospital workers away from city hospitals. RSVP here. Read more.
Jacobs' wins Stier Award
This year's Florence Stier Award has gone to Dr. Leah Jacobs for her proposed research entitled, "Mobile Crisis Teams: Testing the Potential for Perpetuating Disparities."
 
This research aims to understand decision-making when handling mental health crisis calls and factors that may influence crisis workers’ use of coercive interventions (e.g., calling law enforcement, petitioning for civil commitment).
 
Dr. Jacobs will carry out this work with Co-I Nev Jones (Social Work), Jack Rozel (Medical Director of ReSolve Crisis, Psychiatry), and Alex Fixler (Social Work Doctoral Student).

Dr. Kimberly Hoagwood lecture this week!
This Thursday, April 28, 2022 Dr. Kimberley Hoagwood will be speaking at the School of Social Work. Her talk, "Aligning Research and Policy to Improve Health Systems for Children's Mental Health," will be held from 12-1pm in 2017 Cathedral of Learning. Lunch will be provided.

MSW student Dara Pruszenski will present on her experience as a student in academia, researching and learning about community organizing and human behavior and how that curriculum helps others to understand the complex relations of culture, power, systems of oppression, and the history and possible future movements for social justice. Her presentation: "A Student's Review of Fiscal Sponsorship and its Impact on Racial Equity will be held May 17, 2022 12pm EST. Register here.

Celebrating 10 years on the Hill — the Thelma Lovette YMCA
Located in Pittsburgh’s Hill District neighborhood, the Thelma Lovette YMCA is celebrating 10 years. Named for BASW and MSW alumna and longtime civil rights activist Thelma Lovette, she was the first Black social worker at Mercy Hospital. Volunteering for decades for the betterment of the Centre Avenue YMCA, she was the first woman to serve on the YMCA’s board of management. Read more.
Alumnus working on violence prevention
MSW Alumnus Dave Feehan secured a grant from the Minneapolis Health Department for the 2022 Blueprint Approved Institute Fellowship program, a national violence reduction program. The grant was to the Dinkytown Business Alliance, the district adjacent to the University of Minnesota main campus in Minneapolis. The district has seen a spike in crime against residents and students. The grant will be managed by Feehan and will employ a student from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the UMN.
