What is a Limited Submission?
A limited submission solicitation (RFA, RFP, etc.) places a cap on the number of proposals that Auburn may submit to a sponsor. Auburn coordinates limited submissions by sending out a notification via this newsletter and creating competitions in the Auburn University Competition Space (also known as InfoReady). To apply to any limited submission posted in this newsletter, click on the link below and search for your competition listed on the page. Please refer to the Limited Submission Procedures page for a general list of requirements. However, it is recommended that you go to the specific competition as soon as possible and review the requirements to ensure that you are preparing what is requested since the required information for competitions may vary.

The overarching goal of this solicitation is to democratize access to NSF’s advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) ecosystem and ensure fair and equitable access to resources, services, and expertise by strengthening how Cyberinfrastructure Professionals (CIP) function in this ecosystem. It aims to achieve this by (1) deepening the integration of CIPs into the research enterprise, and (2) fostering innovative and scalable education, training, and development of instructional materials, to address emerging needs and unresolved bottlenecks in CIP workforce development. Specifically, this solicitation seeks to nurture, grow and recognize the national CIP [1] workforce that is essential for creating, utilizing and supporting advanced CI to enable and potentially transform fundamental science and engineering (S&E) research and education and contribute to the Nation's overall economic competitiveness and security. Together, the principal investigators (PIs), technology platforms, tools, and expert CIP workforce supported by this solicitation operate as an interdependent ecosystem wherein S&E research and education thrive. All projects are expected to clearly articulate how they address essential community needs, will provide resources that will be widely available to and usable by the research community, and will broaden participation from underrepresented groups.

GRAD 8200 will be offered again in Spring 2023. This class is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to expand their understanding of the Responsible Conduct of Research. This class also helps satisfy NSF’s new RCR education requirements.
Advantages to faculty, students who have taken this course:
- have a deeper understanding of RCR practices,
- are more informed about appropriate research conduct, and
- are able to function within the boundaries of research integrity more independently which can reduce some of the burden on faculty mentors.

The S/Y Eugen Seibold is the Max Planck Society for Chemistry's (MPIC) world-class “sustainable” research yacht, offering contamination-free and continuous sampling and analyses of seawater, plankton, and air. From early 2023, the S/Y Eugen Seibold will be in Latin America. It will dock on the Pacific side of Panama in collaboration with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), from where it will explore the Tropical Eastern Pacific until 2025. During this time, MPIC and STRI are seeking scientists to collaborate and conduct research using the S/Y Eugen Seibold. If you or your team would like to make use of this boat in the region to conduct your own research, please submit a short proposal (details in the website linked above).
MPIC and STRI work purely on a collaborative basis, and therefore research on the boat will not incur any fees. However, it is expected that visiting scientists bring their own consumables necessary to conduct their research.

The DOE SC program in Nuclear Physics (NP) hereby announces its interest in receiving applications for research and development (R&D) efforts directed at artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for autonomous optimization and control of accelerators and detectors of relevance to current or next generation NP accelerator facilities and scientific instrumentation. Current and planned NP facilities and scientific instrumentation face a variety of technical challenges in simulations, control, data acquisition, and analysis. AI methods and techniques promise to address these challenges and shorten the timeline for experimental and computational discovery.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is soliciting investigator-initiated research that will help expand and advance understanding of approaches to prevent community violence and eliminate racial and ethnic inequities in risk for community violence. This initiative is intended to support effectiveness research to evaluate innovative programs, practices, or policies among groups experiencing a high burden of community violence. Innovative approaches are those that have not been rigorously evaluated for effectiveness in reducing community violence. Funds are available to conduct studies focused on preventing all forms of community violence involving youth or young adults (ages 10-34 years), including assaults, homicides, violence between groups, and threats/use of weapons.

The Gulf Ecosystem Initiative is a $3.5 million partnership between the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) in Santa Barbara, CA and the NOAA RESTORE Science program to fund synthesis science and postdoctoral research. Working groups of scientists and decision makers will collaborate to solve pressing questions across the Gulf of Mexico.
Synthesis research will span three areas of interest
-
Fisheries: Take advantage of long-term fish, fisheries, and environmental datasets to tailor products to specific needs across natural resource management decisions.
-
Climate Change: Dive deeply into climate feedback loops, exploring the intersection of human action and environmental response to inform decision making.
-
Ecological Impact of Management: Address Gulf management decisions at any scale and generate new understanding for current or future action.

The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UCSB and NOAA RESTORE Science Program are partnering on a five-year initiative to synthesize data, science, and knowledge about the Gulf of Mexico to inform resource management and restoration efforts. As part of this initiative they will be supporting a growing community of postdoctoral fellows and synthesis teams. In 2023, they seek to fill two postdoctoral positions that will work collaboratively with to-be-selected synthesis science working groups to address interdisciplinary, environmental questions in the Gulf of Mexico. These are two-year positions with the potential for a third year and will be based at NCEAS in Santa Barbara, California.
The Gulf Ecosystem Initiative is designed to engage the Gulf of Mexico research and management community to tackle pressing scientific and societal challenges around three research themes: fisheries, climate change, and the ecological impact of management actions. Each postdoc will participate in one or more working groups and will conduct independent research. NCEAS will provide cutting-edge training in data infrastructure, reproducible workflows, environmental statistics, and working group facilitation. Postdocs will be mentored by one or more working group principal investigators, as well as a Gulf of Mexico-based federal agency.
