National Day for Truth and Reconciliation video

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

On Sept. 30, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Town of Georgina, in partnership with the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, held a flag raising event at the Civic Centre. Flags were also raised at Ravenshoe Road and Woodbine. Members of Council, dignitaries, Town staff and residents joined members of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation for this meaningful event. It was a moving morning of prayer, smudging, sacred fire, remembering and learning.

We move forward with Truth and Reconciliation by having compassion and understanding for those affected by residential schools and the intergenerational trauma it has caused. The Town honours Indigenous voices, working to promote awareness and pave the way for a more inclusive future.

Fire Prevention Week

Oct. 8 to 14 is Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention.” Here are some tips to keep you and your loved ones safe while cooking:

  • Always keep a close eye on what you're cooking, especially for foods with longer cook times.
  • Clear the cooking area of anything that can burn like dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels.
  • Turn pot handles towards the back of the stove and keep a lid nearby in case of a small grease fire.
  • Create a "kid and pet free zone" of at least one metre or three feet around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is being prepared or carried.

Let's all do our part to prevent fires and stay safe in the kitchen.

Halloween safety

Oct. 31 is Halloween and we want to be sure that it is a safe and enjoyable evening for everyone. Pedestrians should use extra caution, be aware of their surroundings and be visible to motorists. Drivers, please slow down and watch for children crossing the roadways. Here are some more great safety tips from York Regional Police:

  • Don't let your kids wear masks. It can obstruct their view and they could hurt themselves.
  • Use reflective items on dark clothing to be seen.
  • Although tempting, remind kids not to eat any candy before they get home so you can check it.
  • Know what candy you can send to school with your kids. Some children have severe allergies, so check first.
