Sea turtles are susceptible to several herpesviruses that are linked to dermatologic diseases, including fibropapillomatosis (FP). Aside from obvious skin lesions, a number of other sublethal effects happen in response to these diseases. Annie Page-Karjian, D.V.M., Ph.D., a researcher from Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and collaborators, conducted a study to determine how FP may affect immune function. Results of the study, published in the journal Animals, found green turtles with FP had significantly lower natural killer cell activity, a measure of innate immune function, which was significantly reduced in turtles with FP compared to tumor-free individuals.
