FAU Harbor Branch scientists and collaborators provide the first-ever glimpse into the movements of young great white sharks in the New York Bight using cutting-edge 3Dsatellite technology. Results, published in the journal, Frontiers in Marine Science, show that across multiple years, the tagged young white sharks consistently display horizontal movements parallel to the shore. Rachel Shaw is the lead author, and a recent graduate from the Fisheries Ecology and Conservation (FEC) Lab, led by Matt Ajemian, Ph.D., co-author and an assistant research professor at FAU Harbor Branch... Sea turtles are susceptible to several herpesviruses that are linked to dermatologic diseases, including fibropapillomatosis (FP). Aside from obvious skin lesions, a number of other sublethal effects happen in response to these diseases. Annie Page-Karjian, D.V.M., Ph.D., a researcher from Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and collaborators, conducted a study to determine how FP may affect immune function. Results of the study, published in the journal Animals, found green turtles with FP had significantly lower natural killer cell activity, a measure of innate immune function, which was significantly reduced in turtles with FP compared to tumor-free individuals. This is the first study to examine natural killer cell activity in relation to FP, improving upon our understanding of altered immune system function associated with this disease... Study
