As a result of pandemic safety measures, including those enacted by municipalities in Alberta, there have been many claims and discussions regarding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These situations highlight the importance of understanding how the Charter applies to municipalities.

Please take some time to read through the toolkit provided by Alberta Emergency Management Agency for Emergency Preparedness Week (May 2-8, 2021). Emergency Preparedness Week is a national event and all community leaders are encouraged to get the word out to residents and educate them on emergency and disaster preparedness. 

Nominations are now open for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ annual Ann MacLean Award for Outstanding Service by a Woman in Municipal Politics. The award recognizes retired women municipal politicians who have shown exemplary service to their community and constituents and who have mentored, or are mentoring, women elected to municipal office or women who are interested in running. The Crane Rental Association of Canada (CRAC) is hosting a webinar on April 20^th, 2021 regarding an amendment to the two-year all-terrain cranes pilot project. CRAC is seeking to limit the pilot project to 3-, 4-, and 5-axle cranes and to allow these cranes to operate at permitted pilot project weights. This will restrict larger cranes (6-,7-, & 8-axles) to the current legislated weight restrictions.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is updating the National Waste Characterization Study in order to develop information on the current composition of waste collected & sent to landfills.
