9th ANNUAL SUMMIT ON NEVADA EDUCATION


Partnerships within our communities – between educators, administrators, elected and appointed leaders, non-profits, families and more – are the most successful paths to sustainable, comprehensive, and successful advancements in education and mental health. The 9th Annual Summit on Nevada Education explored the innovative partnerships and solutions that are making significant strides in these areas.



Attendees included Assemblywoman Angie Taylor, Congresswoman Susie Lee, CEO of Communities in Schools Tammi Hance-Lehr, and Regent Cruz-Crawford. UNLV Alumna and Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, The Honorable Glenna Wright-Gallo, was the keynote speaker.

President Whitfield joined City of North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown on October 10th, for a discussion hosted by the Vegas Chamber to talk about UNLV’s work to support business and economic development. With every conversation, we are building connections that will make an impact!

On November 7th, President Whitfield joined his counterparts from Mexico, Canada, and Costa Rico for a roundtable discussion at the Conference of the Americas on International Education to share perspectives on the changes facing higher education and ways to better prepare for what’s ahead.

Community Engagement


UNLV COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EXPO



Students, staff, and faculty came together to celebrate at the UNLV Community Engagement Expo on October 12th. The Expo included a poster display highlighting the many ways UNLV is living up to its public purpose, and provided opportunities for interdisciplinary networking and collaboration.

 

The Expo also included a panel discussion facilitated by Kyle Kaalberg, Executive Director for Strategy and Strategic Initiatives in the Office of the President. Panelists included: 1) Deirdre Clemente, Associate Director, Public History Program, College of Liberal Arts; 2) Devan Harris, Associate Director, Early Outreach, Office of Admissions; 3) Erika Marquez, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, School of Public Health; and 4) Jeff Shih, Associate Dean of Student and Community Engagement, College of Education.

 

The discussion explored community-based participatory research, service-learning, outreach, and service experiences, as well as Top Tier 2.0 Community Partnership goals. Panelists shared how they identify and work with community partners, the importance of reciprocity and mutuality in their partnerships, barriers and challenges they have faced, and the most rewarding aspects of their community engagement work.   








ALUMNI DAY OF SERVICE



In partnership with Commissioner Tick Segerblom and Get Outdoors Nevada, the UNLV Alumni Association and our community friends participated in the 2nd Annual Alumni Day of Service on November 4th.


This years’ service project was a clean-up of the Sunrise Trailhead/Flamingo-Arroyo Trail. We acknowledge and applaud the hard work of our community and alumni as we collected 1 ton (2,000 pounds) of trash and microtrash.


The UNLV Alumni Association’s Advocacy Committee and Philanthropy Committee look forward to the continued uplifting of our community as we raise social awareness and improve the world around us.

UNLV FOUNDATION ANNUAL DINNER



The 2023 UNLV Foundation Annual Dinner was held on October 2nd, to celebrate philanthropy and education while honoring UNLV’s most generous philanthropists. Kevin O'Leary, co-host of the Emmy-Award-winning reality television show "Shark Tank," provided the keynote address.

KERESTESI CENTER FOR INSURANCE & RISK MANAGEMENT



The Lee Business School launched the new Kerestesi Center for Insurance and Risk Management on October 6th. UNLV is one of only a few universities in the West to offer this type of academic program which will allow students to work directly with industry experts and enter the workforce ready to make an impact!

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY



UNLV celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 9th with a Proclamation recognizing Indigenous communities of the region. The Proclamation was presented to the Native American Student Association, who helped start the movement to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day locally.

THE FREMONT CANNON STAYS RED!



The Fremont Cannon stays RED! UNLV Football retained its right to the Fremont Cannon on October 14th, beating UNR 45 to 27 in the largest defeat between the two rivals since 2004. Also notable, one week later, on October 21st, UNLV became bowl eligible as they secured their 6th win this season!

 

LIVE FROM UNLV: STATE OF NEVADA



Live from UNLV, KNPR News host Joe Schoenmann broadcasted the October 18th episode of State of Nevada featuring President Whitfield. Their discussion focused on the importance of maintaining balance while providing opportunities for UNLV’s 32-thousand-plus campus community in spite of and because of today’s challenges.

 

REBELS IN ACTION

Magdalena Santelices Chadwick from the Universidad de los Andes in Santiago, Chile, visited UNLV on October 4th, and met with Tamara Marino, Education & Information Officer in Government and Community Engagement, to learn more about how UNLV’s community engagement is structured and what its impacts have been on Southern Nevadans.

 

On October 5th, UNLV’s College of Engineering hosted state legislators, including Assemblywoman Shannon Bilbray Axelrod and Assemblyman Howard Watts, for a sneak-peak of the soon-to-be completed Advanced Engineering Building, which will help further UNLV’s educational training and research in areas of national need, and bolster our local workforce with top-notch talent. 

The UNLV GEAR UP ASPIRE team (Katrina Ryles, Anne Savage, Autumn Williams, Maria Laina, Etelvina Esquivel, and Melissa Mora) helped facilitate programming at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, on Saturday, October 7th, as part of the Museum’s STEAM Saturday event which provided an opportunity for middle school students from around the Valley to explore acid base reactions. 

Councilman Cedric Crear hosted a Ward 5 Community Forum at the City of Las Vegas City Hall on October 12th. Multiple community organizations, including UNLV, came together to share the many community resources available to help those in need. 

UNLV hosted the second annual Young Women’s Leadership Conference, (organized by Dr. Anita Turner and Wes Hall) on campus October 14th, which connected with more than 400 young women from Southern Nevada’s high schools as they explored the many paths within higher education available to them. Attendees also included City of North Las Vegas Mayor, Pamela Goynes-Brown.  

On October 16th, Tamara Marino (Government & Community Engagement) joined colleagues from across the country in Washington, D.C. to hear Dr. Nasser Paydar, Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education, present an update on higher education priorities of the Biden-Harris Administration, as well as a look at the future of college affordability and equity. 

Government and Community Engagement enjoyed connecting with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and members of the community at this year’s Rebel Homecoming Festival on October 18th. The festival provided a great opportunity to share our successes and explore opportunities for new partnerships in the coming year.

UNLV attended the Re-Invent Schools Fall Festival at Wasden Elementary School on October 20th, to not only introduce the kiddos to UNLV, but also to share the many resources available on campus for members of the community. Much work went into trying to survive Godzilla! 

On October 25th, UNLV medical, dental, mental health, and legal resources were shared with the residents of the Siegel Suites on Martin Luther King Boulevard at a health and wellness resource fair hosted by Puentes and Silver Summit Health Plan designed to improve the quality of life for the property’s residents.

Jason Wasden began a career in higher education at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) as a student worker in the registrar’s office. In October of 2000, he accepted a position with the Bursars’ Office at CSN as a Clerical Trainee.
