“However, as for Sandwich, I cannot speak particularly. Ours was but half a Sandwich at most, and that must have fallen on the buttered side some time.”

Cape Cod, by Henry David Thoreau, chronicles several trips he made to the Massachusetts coastline in the 1850s. In it, he references the eighth volume of the Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society and quotes: “After riding through a body of woods, twelve miles in extent, interspersed with but few houses, the settlement of Sandwich appears, with a more agreeable effect, to the eye of the traveller.” Thoreau seems to have a different viewpoint when he writes, “Ours was but half a Sandwich at most.” Read chapter 2, “Stage Coach Views,” here.
The Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society is a series of monographs and historical sources published by the MHS. Volume 8 contains a wealth of information about the history of the Massachusetts shoreline, including Cape Cod.
